A Friend of The Family Responds To Sons Of Guns Arrest

As does one of the victims.

Who Gets Shot in America?

The paper offers a highly valuable account . . . of how gunshot injuries are unevenly distributed throughout the population.

Contradictions. "They have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing."

"Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing."
"What the hell are you talking about?" Yossarian shouted at her in bewildered, furious protest. "How did you know it was Catch-22? Who the hell told you it was Catch-22?"
"The soldiers with the hard white hats and clubs. The girls were crying. 'Did we do anything wrong?' they said. The men said no and pushed them away out the door with the ends of their clubs. 'Then why are you chasing us out?' the girls said. 'Catch 22,' the men said. All they kept saying was 'Catch-22, Catch-22. What does it mean, Catch 22? What is Catch-22?"
"Didn't they show it to you?" Yossarian demanded, stamping about in anger and distress. "Didn't you even make them read it?"
"They don't have to show us Catch-22," the old woman answered. "The law says they don't have to."
"What law says they don't have to?"
"Catch-22".
-- Catch 22 by Joseph Heller.
No one likes a hypocrite – which helps to explain why thinking people increasingly tend to dislike cops. They routinely ignore or violate the laws they spend their days forcing us to obey. Everyone, for example, has seen cops insolently ignoring the posted speed limit. Frequently, while not wearing their “safety” belt. Insolently, because they are well-aware that they can do both with impunity, since we have no legal power to pull them over.

Some seditionist old fart speaking at the July 4th parade in Westcliffe, CO, earlier this year.
It is with embarrassment that I am just now getting around to discharging some promises I made to myself and others on my trip in July out to Colorado. One story that I was fascinated to learn was that of George Gramlich's Mountain Publishing and the Sangre de Cristo Sentinel.
Like many rural places scattered across the country, the "traditional" community newspaper in Custer County, CO, was and is operated by owners with a decided liberal and Democrat party bias. Starting on 4 July of last year, Mountain Publishing was founded to provide a counterweight to this long-standing collectivist monopoly. As the paper proudly declares, the Sentinel is:
A newspaper to serve the good people of this county, surrounding counties and our neighboring communities located along the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. A newspaper with a conservative voice. A newspaper with "A DIFFERENT VIEW FROM THE SAME MOUNTAINS" than what is available now. A newspaper for all liberty and freedom loving citizens and patriots. We believe this is a much needed "CHOICE" in these beautiful, mostly rural, areas of Colorado. The Sentinel (also knows as a Sentry) is a Guardian. He watches over, protects, informs and warns us and others of danger. There are many current dangers to our liberties, freedoms and rights. So, first, we need to be informed, then we need to stand up for and be prepared to protect these liberties, freedoms and rights. Lastly, we need to remain vigilant. This newspaper will be our Sentinel and help us all do that.
And the amazing thing is that this weekly has been remarkably successful, with a business model that can be duplicated, I think, with good results in other places. With a lean and mean staff of just three paid staff and many willing volunteers, when I was there it had built up a circulation of 1100 that reaches well beyond the county, which according to the 2010 census had a population of only 4,255!
Printed on the presses of the nearby Pueblo Chieftan, in July the Sentinel had subscribers in 30 states all the while providing hard copy news and opinion to the local market. As George told me, "We provide a conservative/libertarian voice that isn't available in the liberal-owned papers that usual dominate in most areas. We cover local scandals that otherwise wouldn't be covered." Gramlich added with pride, "We have harnessed the power of the press" to the discomfiture of local politicians and especially the local Democrat party.
Instead of cursing the collectivist darkness, George urges others to emulate their success. "Get off your ass, start your own paper, and make it happen."
George welcomes inquiries from others interested in starting their own versions of the Sentinel. The Sangre de Cristo Sentinel and Mountain Publishing Company, Inc. are located at 610 Main St., Westcliffe, CO 81252. Their phone number is 719-783-3360.

Gander Mountain is being sued for following the law to complete firearms transactions, and for not having ESP and being able to read minds, and look into the souls of other human beings. Gander Mountain is being sued for not having special powers and abilities not possessed by any other mortals, but expected and required of gun dealers.

Judicial Watch: Feds’ Bulletin Describes Threat of Imminent Terrorist Attack on Southern Border

And they're worried about us? Islamic terrorist groups are operating in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez and planning to attack the United States with car bombs or other vehicle born improvised explosive devices (VBIED). High-level federal law enforcement, intelligence and other sources have confirmed to Judicial Watch that a warning bulletin for an imminent terrorist attack on the border has been issued. Agents across a number of Homeland Security, Justice and Defense agencies have all been placed on alert and instructed to aggressively work all possible leads and sources concerning this imminent terrorist threat.

Down the memory hole at Jupiter Entertainment. The self-inflicted wounds of Sons of Guns.

So in the Libyan fable it is told
That once an eagle, stricken with a dart,
Said, when he saw the fashion of the shaft,
"With our own feathers, not by others' hands,
Are we now smitten." -- Aeschylus.
Jupiter Entertainment, the production company for Sons of Guns, has scrubbed any mention of it from their website. Discovery Channel, as previously noted, cancelled the show.
Will Hayden is entitled to a presumption of innocence of the charges. But the fact of the matter is that Will, the show and Red Jacket management were already hip deep in big problems, legal and otherwise, deriving from a multi-sided contest of over-inflated "look-at-me-I'm-on-TV" egos, piss-poor business practices and shady dealings, in which Jupiter Entertainment toward the end was at least in part complicit. As the Devil is certainly abroad in the land, seeking whom he may devour, I rather suspect that ATF is not done with the principals, current and former, of Red Jacket and the sad thing is that those same folks charitably supplied all the rope to that agency necessary to hang themselves. For those who see in the latest charges against Will the unseen hand of some ATF conspiracy, rest assured that they did not need it and there is, to my knowledge, no evidence of it. It is, however, a combination of Greek tragedy and Shakespearean farce that it will end this way but Aeschylus certainly applies here. Or, in the modern American version by Frank Zappa:
Do you love it?
Do you hate it?
There it is,
The way you made it.

Shielding the Executioner: Shaun Cowley, Paul Cassell, and the Murder of Danielle Willard

During a lengthy career that includes stints as a federal prosecutor and judge, Paul Cassell has devoutly upheld the vision of 18th Century arch-authoritarian Joseph de Maistre, who taught that “all greatness, all power, all social order depends on the executioner.” The figure dispensing lethal violence on behalf of the state is both “the terror of human society” and the “tie that holds it together,” Maistre insisted. “Take away this incontrovertible force from the world, and at that very moment order is superseded by chaos, thrones fall, society disappears." For Maistre, the executioner is a high priest presiding over the arcane ritual in which lethal violence is transubstantiated into public order. Paul Cassell shares that view. Removing procedural impediments to execution has been one of two causes that have largely defined Mr. Cassell’s legal activism. The other is a campaign to overturn Miranda v. Arizona and the “Exclusionary Rule” buttressed by that decision. Cassell has distinguished himself by his zeal to allow police to brow-beat people into confessions, and executioners to ply their trade more energetically.

Anti-gun women continue to corroborate ‘progressive’ contradiction

In true “progressive” fashion, the people who support a woman’s right to determine her own self-defense choices are portrayed as anti-woman. And it’s especially rich considering this is coming from an employee of an authoritarian patriarch, and one with some “sexual blind spots” of his own.

One year later: Sen. Scott Beason, NRA hope to see gun bill taken a step further
The Alabama Sheriffs Association opposed Beason's bill last year. Sheriffs gave two basic reasons --- public safety and the potential loss of pistol permit revenues, which help fund their operations. They said the change could lead to more road rage incidents. Montgomery County Sheriff D.T. Marshall says the permit requirement needs to stay in place for loaded pistols in cars. "If you have a weapon in your car and have a permit, somebody has checked you," Marshall said. "Otherwise, people with mental defect, criminals, anybody could be carrying guns."
Lions! And tigers! And bears! Oh, my!

"There's no remaining honor in Roy Moore's Gadsden flag."

Readers may recall my Flag day speech about flags both false and true. As I said at that time:
We must answer that question at the end of history -- which country does the stars and stripes represent? For in the end it certainly cannot represent both. The Gadsden flag, with its threatening rattlesnake and bold warning "Don't tread on me" is perhaps more plainly honest, more unambiguous, than the stars and stripes. Freed of the burden of being the national colors which seem to be saddled with the necessity of being all things to all people, the Gadsden flag is plain in its declaration of free men and the rights to our own liberty and property and lives. Don't threaten me, it warns. Or, in the words of some of this generation -- "Don't start nothin', won't be nothin'." It is not as blunt as the Gonzales flag of Texas liberty with its image of a cannon and the challenge "Come and take it," but it is close enough, as they say, "for government work."
This is why the Gadsden flag is so popular at rallies of today's liberty movements -- from the Tea Party to the protesters of the Federal land grab at the Bundy Ranch and elsewhere in the west to Second Amendment activists of today -- the message is clear: There is a line, Mr. Government Bureaucrat, that you cross at your own deadly peril. "Don't tread on me." DON'T TREAD ON US! It is for this reason that the collectivists -- the domestic enemies of the Founders' Republic -- are made somewhat angered, if not deranged, by the Gadsden flag. Its sentiment is plain -- it cannot be polluted or corrupted or co-opted. They must therefore do their best to demonize it, to discredit it, to profane it, and to lie about those who fly it. We have seen that very clearly in their reaction to the Miller meth-head murderers' misuse of the Gadsden flag in their Nevada rampage. The flag is itself "anti-government" they proclaim and proof that the Millers represent the rest of us "anti-government types."
Now I don't know about you, but I'm not "anti-government," although the Southern Poverty Law Center has been calling me that for two decades now. I am in fact pro-government of the kind the Founders would recognize. I am pro small government, safe government -- a government of limited powers -- a government that supports the rule of law AND OPERATES WITHIN IT. When our enemies -- those domestic enemies of the Constitution that the Founders warned us about -- call us "anti-government" what they really mean is that we are anti-"do-it-our-way-or-we'll-kill-you" government. Of course they're right about that, but they cannot honestly admit it to others that they are trying to convince, so they call us "anti-government" and hope the lie sticks.
But flags are symbols. They are shorthand for who you are and what you represent. And what you love. So if they can discredit one symbol and co-opt another to their purposes they are more than halfway down the road to their victory of the collective over the individual.
The entire speech transcript may be found here. And in proof of my analysis back in June, we now have this.
However the Tea Party sees the symbol, the Gadsden flag has been adopted by private militias, the Sovereign movement, and radical and racist seditionist conspirators of all kinds. Killers have committed political murder under that symbol. The state's Tea Party might wish to taunt the oppressive federal government, and they should do so, as they have political points to make. But they cannot stand upright under the Gadsden flag.
I will have my own answer to this screed later.

Malloy intentionally distorting gun group's potential support for Foley

The one certainty is, if it looks like a substantial threat to Malloy’s reelection is emerging, the rhetoric about extremism will intensify, and billionaires opposed to guns in private hands they do not control will spare no expense at controlling the election message as well.

Most gun owners appear unaware of or indifferent to gun group merger

I will make one observation on that effort, not to take sides, but simply to comment once more on a phenomenon I've seen result in effort after effort evaporating over the years, something I call "Profiles in Apathy." For those who agree with her, and from comments I've read, many do, and strongly, it's shameful that to date, fewer than 400 signatures have been collected on the petition opposed to the deal.

CT to split the anti-Malloy vote. When Malloy wins, the gun raids begin, with national civil war to follow.

Mary O'Leary, readers may recall, is the Red Queen of Connecticut "journalism," famous for writing stories and then conducting "interviews" by reading blog posts, Well, the Red Queen reports that Connecticut Citizens Defense League expected to back Tom Foley
The clearest supporter of gun rights in this gubernatorial race is Republican Joe Visconti, who successfully petitioned his way onto the ballot to serve as an option to Foley and Malloy, but the CCDL will not support him.
The CCDL is afraid, with damn good reason, that Visconti will split the anti-Malloy opposition vote and assure the gun grabber's re-election.
Understand this: the only reason Malloy and his KGB toady Mike Lawlor have held off on the gun raids that Lawlor has been itching to do since January is Malloy's fear that a body count of innocent citizens and their families might spoil his re-election chances. Once he IS re-elected in November, we can expect the gun raids to begin before the end of the year -- and, as bloody night follows day, that we will be in a national civil war by January.
I will be in Connecticut the week before the election to make this point.

Moderation in Va. Senate race will advance special interests, not principles

“I know Gillespie and I will not support him or vote for him,” a frequent correspondent active in Virginia Second Amendment promotion and support told me. Part of that may be due to Gillespie’s refusal to personally commit to the issue, as illustrated by his failure to return a Virginia Citizens Defense League Candidate Survey. Part of it may be due to his consummate insider loyalties to the GOP establishment as a former Bush White House staffer and head of the RNC. Part of it may be that he established a “bipartisan” lobbying firm with a Democrat partner, and a former White House Counsel to Bill Clinton at that. And the big part is that there was a better candidate that the establishment did not want..

"ATF Agents Train For Next Standoff" & the lie that keeps on being told.

The special response teams started in 1996 following recommendations stemming from the 1993 Waco disaster, where four ATF agents who were part of group of law enforcement serving arrest warrants were killed in a shootout. The siege resulted in a 51-day standoff with the ATF and FBI. It finally ended when leader David Koresh and his followers set fire to their compound, resulting in the deaths of Koresh and 81 Branch Davidians, including women and children.

Reid's position on 'assault weapons' for police sounds familiar

Both Reid and Horsford appear to be arguing that the fact that sometimes law enforcement agencies do indeed abuse the power of certain firearms should not mean that agencies that do not engage in such abuses be forced to get by with lesser guns. Does the same logic somehow not apply to the rest of us?

Rough patch continues.

Open Letter of Warning to Governor Nixon From Missouri Oath Keepers

The militarization of our police is not a "black problem." It's an American problem, and it affects all of us. Senator Rand Paul is right. We must demilitarize our police. Governor Nixon, you stand at a critical moment in history. You must reverse course and set the example for other states to follow, to demilitarize our police and bring police methods back within the bounds of the Constitution. A failure to do so will further place millions of us American veterans who still take our oaths seriously on a fateful collision course with a burgeoning police state that is going down the same road that other nations have traveled, with tragic ends. Our grandfathers and fathers fought against totalitarian police states overseas. Please don't force us to fight against one here at home. Demilitarize the police now, and let us all live in peace under the Constitution, with liberty, and justice, for all.

“A housewife and a cat will both chase mice out of the kitchen. But the cat wants more mice to come back.” – Aaron Zelman
Somebody reminded me this week of that statement from Aaron, the late, great founder of Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership. That was how Aaron contrasted himself and JPFO with Alan Gottlieb and Gottlieb’s SAF/CCRKBA.
Aaron wanted to educate people so that victim disarmament would go away. He would have been thrilled to be able to close JPFO’s doors and say, “We’ve done it.”
On the other hand, he despised Alan Gottlieb and saw him as an opportunist who used scary mailings to turn SAF/CCRKBA into a fundraising factory. He saw Gottlieb as a person who needed and wanted “gun control” because that’s what kept the money and the publicity flowing.
I can back up Claire's statement with personal knowledge: Aaron despised Gottlieb. That JPFO might be handed over to him would have Aaron Zelman rolling over in his grave.
Yet, as David Codrea comments, we only have ourselves to blame for this turn of events.
I will say this much: Anyone who opposes the merger but will not personally help with needed operating funds wants something from others for nothing.

Army quits tests after competing rifle outperforms M4A1 carbine
A competing rifle outperformed the Army’s favored M4A1 carbine in key firings during a competition last year before the service abruptly called off the tests and stuck with its gun, according to a new confidential report.
The report also says the Army changed the ammunition midstream to a round “tailored” for the M4A1 rifle. It quoted competing companies as saying the switch was unfair because they did not have enough time to fire the new ammo and redesign their rifles before the tests began.
Exactly how the eight challengers — and the M4 — performed in a shootout to replace the M4, a soldier’s most important personal defense, has been shrouded in secrecy.
But an “official use only report” by the Center for Naval Analyses shows that one of the eight unidentified weapons outperformed the M4 on reliability and on the number of rounds fired before the most common type of failures, or stoppages, occurred, according to data obtained by The Washington Times.

How Much Does a Gun Cost in Kurdistan?

Militants’ advance means booming business for Kurdish weapon dealers
There are some heavy weapons here. A BKC—an Iraqi clone of the Soviet PKM machine gun—goes for $5,000. One dealer says an RPG-7 launcher and rocket together cost just $200. But the vendors stress that the heavy stuff is only for the Peshmerga and the Asayish. Many dealers in Kirkuk also reserve American weapons like M-16s and M-4s for the Kurdish security forces. But American weapons are plentiful. One dealer explains that the Islamic State’s weapon of choice is a captured Iraqi army M-16.

Obama Considering Granting 800K Guest-Worker Visas
After meeting with a "bevy" of big-business groups, President Barack Obama is reportedly considering granting them up to 800,000 additional guest-worker visas via executive actions. . . The Obama administration is also considering granting work permits for low-skilled industries as well. . .
Numerous companies – like Microsoft and Cisco – have massively laid off American workers while pushing the Obama administration for more guest-worker visas at a time when scholars and studies from organizations on the left, right, and center have debunked the notion that there is a shortage of American high-tech workers. The Obama administration reportedly wants to appease big-business interests so they give him air cover for his potential executive amnesty, which may enable millions of illegal immigrants to get work permits in addition to temporary amnesty.

The Senate barely does anything these days — except approve judges that could shape the law for a generation. The Race Hustler and the White House (but I repeat myself).

Revved Up. How Al Sharpton became Obama’s go-to man on race.
A few days after 18-year-old Mike Brown was gunned down in Ferguson, Missouri, White House officials enlisted an unusual source for on-the-ground intelligence amid the chaos and tear gas: the Rev. Al Sharpton, a fiery activist who became a household name by provoking rather than pacifying. . .
“There’s a trust factor with The Rev from the Oval Office on down,” a White House official familiar with their dealings told me. “He gets it, and he’s got credibility in the community that nobody else has got. There’s really no one else out there who does what he does. . .”
Obama was “horrified” by the images he was seeing on TV, Jarrett told Sharpton, and proceeded to pepper him with questions as she collected information for the president: How bad was the violence? Was it being fueled by outside groups—and could Sharpton do anything to talk them down? What did the Brown family want the White House to do?

Namely, that there are people like Pelosi, the highest-ranking female politician in American history, who get it, and people like Marino, merely a second-term congressman from “gun- and religion-clinging” northeastern Pennsylvania, who don’t.

Collectivists at The New Republic celebrate the Molotov Cocktail -- and the headline writer rewrites history and his own story.

The Anti-Nazi Roots of the Molotov Cocktail Hurled on Ferguson's Streets
In the winter of 1939, after seizing eastern Poland and leaving the country’s west to the Third Reich, the Soviets invaded Finland. Molotov (“Hammer” in Russian) then said in a speech, “Tomorrow we will dine in Helsinki!” After Soviet bombs began to fall on Finnish troops, Molotov insisted that the Soviets were dropping food and drink instead. Exhibiting a keen wit, the Finns thus dubbed Soviet cluster bombs “Molotov bread baskets” (the food) and named the improvised weapons that they were using against Soviet armor “Molotov cocktails" (the drink).
Leave to the collectivists of the 21st Century to rewrite an anti-Soviet weapon into an "anti-Nazi" weapon.

Sisters in arms don’t fit overwhelming media preference for Bloomberg Moms

Similar examples of leadership, perseverance and refusal to knuckle under to "progressive" standards on approved viewpoints for women can be found in other groups, such as the aforementioned Second Amendment Sisters and The Well Armed Woman. So it’s understandable why “progressive” media favors subsidized weaklings, spooked by propaganda-fed fears, over self-confident women who refuse to be victims. After all, the latter have mastered tools that give most members of the press, especially the anti-gun male contingent, a case of the vapors.

DiFi demands executive order banning import of "assault weapons."

Behind Closed Doors, Obama Crafts Executive Actions
Mr. Obama’s increasingly expansive appetite for the use of unilateral action on issues including immigration, tax policy and gay rights has emboldened activists and businesses to flock to the administration with their policy wish lists. It also has opened the president, already facing charges of executive overreach, to criticism that he is presiding over opaque policy-making, with the potential to reward political backers at the expense of other interests, including some on the losing side who are threatening to sue. . .
“During your State of the Union address, you stated that you want to make 2014 a ‘year of action,'  ” Senator Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, wrote to Mr. Obama in March, in a letter requesting that he issue an executive order banning the import of assault or military weapons.
The go-it-alone approach has left the administration — which claims to be the most transparent in United States history — essentially making policy from the White House, replacing congressional hearings and floor debates with closed meetings for invited constituencies.

"This shit is going to get innocent people killed." Mark Potok's Deadly Sock Puppet: How the Department of Homeland Security dances to SPLC's tune.

Brietbart recently posted a copy of a Department of Homeland Security "Intelligence" Assessment entitled "Domestic Violent Extremists Pose Increased Threat to Government Officials and Law Enfircement." Breitbart notes:
A leaked document from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis predicts increased “anti-government violence over the next year.” The document says the inspiration for violence is Cliven Bundy’s Bunkerville standoff with the Bureau of Land Management from earlier in the year.
DHS’s seven-page report entitled Domestic Violent Extremists Pose a Threat to Government Officials and Law Enforcement points to the recent murders of two Las Vegas law enforcement officers as evidence that there is a “growing trend of anti-government violence compared to the previous four years and inspired by perceived government overreach and oppression” and the “perceived victory at Bunkervile” will “likely prompt more violence.”
The report is dated 22 July 2014 and reads as if lifted directly from this Southern "Poverty" Law Center screed published earlier in the month entitled , "War in the West: The Bundy Ranch Standoff and the American Radical Right."
This was preceded by New York State Counter Terrorism Bulletin CTB 14-07 dated 12 June 2014 and entitled Recent Spike in Violence Targeting Law Enforcement.
This report, published for internal law enforcement use only by something called the "New York State Intelligence Center," also focuses on the the alleged link between the Bundy's and the methamphetamine fueled cop killers, Jerad and Amanda Miller. It reported:
Evidence at the scene and further investigation revealed the Millers embraced a far right militia ideology. At the scene, the Millers draped a Gasden flag (“Don’t Tread on Me”) over one dead officer, left a swastika on the other, and a note that said, "This is the start of the revolution." While initial reporting of the swastika was interpreted as relating to white supremacist ideology, it appears it was meant to imply the police are Nazis, and the Millers do not appear to have subscribed to a white supremacist ideology. After entering Walmart, the shooters stated this was “the beginning of a revolution.” Both suspects reportedly often spoke about their anti-government ideas and desire to kill law enforcement. The Millers’ social media “centered on Second Amendment gun laws, government spying and drug laws” as well as contained numerous references to the impending need to use violence to support those causes. Jerad Miller had over a decade long criminal history in multiple states, including misdemeanor battery and drug trafficking. . . Jerad and Amanda Miller had also travelled (sic) to Bundy’s ranch in Nevada, although they were reportedly asked to leave for being too radical and due to Jerad’s criminal record.
And then the report attempts to tie the Millers to me as well, as I noted at the time.
In both the Bourque and Miller cases, the perpetrators were concerned with common far right conspiracies involving government seizure of private firearms. With the passage of the NYSafe Act in January 2013, a growing number of far right extremists – particularly militia and sovereign citizens – may view NYS as a more attractive target in order to further their agenda. These extremists must be distinguished from law abiding citizens exercising their first and second amendment rights – namely extremists are those willing to use violence, rather than the democratic process, to further their cause.
Michael Brian Vanderboegh, a longtime militia member and founder of the III Percent Patriot Movement which was supported by Jerad and Amanda Miller, travelled (sic) to NYS at least once in 2013 to speak to the Liberty Oath Keepers meeting in Monticello, NY.18 The III Percent Patriots are a militia group comprised primarily of gun rights extremists who believe in the need to use violence against the government to prevent what they believe to be an impending seizure of all private firearms. The name derives from “an obscure, and not particularly accurate, Revolutionary War ‘statistic’ that claimed that only 3% of the American population during the Revolutionary War participated as combatants in the war.” The Oath Keepers is an organization composed of current and former military and law enforcement personnel who take a pledge to “not obey unconstitutional orders such as orders to disarm the American people, to conduct warrantless searches, or to detain Americans as enemy combatants.” There have been multiple observed instances of overlapping membership in the Oath Keepers and the III Percent Patriots, and the Oath Keepers’ founder has spoken supportively of the III Percent Patriot Movement.
In my Flag Day speech at Belchertown, Massachusetts I dissected these allegations, the transcript of which can be found here and the video of my presentation can be found here. As I observed, the report's "use of loaded language, conflation and what I call "guilt by disassociation" makes it a minor classic of the big lie." As I recalled at the time:
You know I met the Millers briefly at the Bundy standoff when they came up to volunteer. They struck me as a danger to the mission of protecting the Bundys at first glance. Jerad projected all the ambiance of the methamphetamine addict that his neighbors later said he has. He was heavily tattooed and admitted under questioning that he was a convicted felon despite the fact that he was packing a semi-auto pistol on his hip, I counseled Stewart Rhodes of Oath Keepers and Jerry Delemus who ran the security operation that they be sent on their way and they were. The Millers later complained on their Facebook page that they had been turned away. Of course, we had no inkling that the Millers would later turn violent, nor could we have. These facts have not prevented the collectivist media from tying the Millers to the Bundys, or to us, or, according to this official document of the New York State Police, to, well, me.
I refuted the allegations of the links to the Bundys, the Three Percent movement, the Oath Keepers and to me, concluding:
Okay, let's recap: The Millers are linked to the Bundys -- except they're not. The Millers were supporters of Vanderboegh, the guy who had them ejected from the Bundy security operation -- except they weren't. They embraced militia values -- except they didn't, The Three Percent movement is a militia -- except it isn't. And the Three Percent are paranoids for believing that the New York state cops are going to seize semi-auto weapons -- except they are. Other than that, this is a totally accurate report. Does that clear things up for you?
I went on:
Now that's funny -- except it isn't. You know Governor Coumo's finest were nice enough to footnote their various assertions. You know the source of everything they wrote about me? The ADL and the Southern Poverty Law Center (although down in Alabama we call them the Southern Preposterous Lie Center). Did you know that the FBI recently announced that they were no longer accepting SPLC "intelligence reports" because of political bias and factual errors? Unfortunately that word doesn't seem to have penetrated to the New York state political policemen of the so-called "intelligence center." It kinda reminds me of that old joke from Rocky and Bullwinkle. Moose and squirrel are standing beside some garbage cans looking for Captain Peachfuzz when out of one of the cans pops a guy in a hat and trenchcoat who announces "I'm from military intelligence." Rocky fixes him with a penetrating gaze and replies, "Don't use contradictory terms."
Like I said, it's funny but it's not. This report goes out to police everywhere. Many are going to accept it as gospel. And who do you think they're going to be reporting? You, with the Oath Keepers tee shirt. You, with the Three Percent patch. You, with the Gadsden flag out in front of your house or the "Don't tread on me" sticker on your pickup truck. Because everyone now "knows" because of sloppy propaganda like this piece of trash that the Gadsden flag equals Three Percent equals Oath Keeper equals domestic terrorist equals meth-head cop killer.
"Don't use contradictory terms" indeed. And the mendacity, conflation and sloppy thinking of the New York State so-called "Intelligence Center" (courtesy, apparently of the Southern Poverty Law Center) becomes even more deadly when the lie is spouted by the mega-amplification of the current version of the American political police, DHS.
You know, there is an organization that has admitted direct ties to the Millers: the Las Vegas Police Department. As reported by Reuters:
According to police, the Millers had cooperated with Nevada law enforcement twice this year to provide witness testimony, but detectives did not receive any indication that the couple had anti-police sentiments.
"Witness testimony"? Regarding what and who? The Bundys? I wouldn't be surprised, since according to the Millers at the time, they claimed to us that they had driven out directly from Indiana. So any contact with LVPD would have been after that. The "mainstream" media has been singularly uninterested in those admitted links. The Southern Poverty Law Center, the NYSIC and DHS do not mention this vital fact since it contradicts the meme they wish to project.
Another curious fact reported by CBS at the time which seems to be beneath the notice of the SPLC-DHS propagandists: "While living in Lafayette, Jerad and his wife Amanda took part in last November’s 'Million Mask March' – a gathering of protesters from the Occupy movement, anarchists, and hacktivists."
Now if this doesn't seem to be the cause of "right-wing extremists" to you, you would be correct. But as my good friend Bob Wright pointed out to me when this news broke, "You know, Mike, once a snitch, always a snitch. If he was snitching in Las Vegas as they admit, he was probably snitching in Indiana." Which begs the question, were the Millers directed to the Bundys by some police agency which already had the much-convicted Jerad in its thrall? Another question ignored by SPLC, DHS and the media.
Professor Robert Churchill at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, in his ground-breaking history of the militia movement in the 1990s, To Shake Their Guns in the Tyrant's Face: Libertarian Political Violence and the Origins of the Militia Movement, observed that SPLC, ADL and others on the collectivist left had created what he called "the narrative of 1995" that wrongly characterized "the militia movement (as) an outgrowth of the racist right," alleging that the militias were "anti-democratic, paranoid, virulently anti-Semitic, genocidally racist, and brutally violent. Much of this literature suggested that Timothy McVeigh was the movement's highest expression."
In doing so, Churchill observes, SPLC generated a "moral panic," a new "brown scare," that was embraced by the news media, politicians and law enforcement. Churchill notes, "the civil rights organizations that produced the narrative of 1995 conceived of themselves as political opponents of the militia movement, and these organizations made the legal suppression of the movement one of their central objectives. That political objective has systematically shaped their reporting on the movement."
Churchill's principal concern with this was to point out how the narrative of 1995 had skewed the academic study of history. However, it is quite a more deadly seriously thing when the narrative of 1995 is dusted off, polished up with new lies for a new century AND internalized by the most powerful and largely secretive police agency in the country.
I brought all these various reports to the attention of some former intelligence analysts with experience in federal, state and military organizations over the past forty years. All of them were dismissive of the quality of the reports and frankly shocked that any self-respecting analyst would be associated with what one called "obvious propaganda."
Said another, "We laughed at (Morris) Dees' 'intelligence reports' (back in the 90s). They were obvious fund-raising tools tailored to shaking money out of the liberal establishment Easy Coast money tree. Nobody serious put any credence in them."
Another observed, "I can't believe that the New York report . . . and especially the DHS report were written by real analysts. They were either written by, or at the direction of, politicians who wanted them to turn out that way."
"This is some dangerous shit," observed a third. "When DHS is not only letting Mark Potok do their thinking for them, but reporting it and repeating it all up and down the law enforcement channels of command and communication . . . well, this shit is going to get innocent people killed."
Said another in agreement, "These reports are definitely being written to justify a course of action already decided. . . Part of the problem is that these agencies . . . and especially a new agency like DHS, have no institutional memories. They are staffed by new-hires off the street with no practical experience in intelligence collection, collation, filtration and analysis. . . They are divorced from reality . . . and their bosses are telling them what reality is so they write what their bosses want to hear."
The third retired analyst snorted, "God damn, son, if you had told me back in the 90s that the analysts of a serious federal agency were allowing themselves to be SPLC's sock puppets, I'd have told you you were full of shit. NOBODY could be that that stupid."
But, I pointed out, somebody currently at DHS sure was. "Yeah," he repeated, "this shit is going to get somebody killed. Too bad it probably won't be Mark Potok."

Oh, the Things We Choose Not to See!

Seriously? The federal government arms local cops (including arming them with drones, BTW). Then it worries that protestors and journalists might attack these overly armed Barney Fifes from the air?

11th hour Politifact flak shows Joe Miller over target on immigration and guns

That in turn makes it fair to ask where NRA is on the Alaska race, and why they continue to avoid the impact of illegal immigration/amnesty on gun rights using the “single issue” excuse, especially after they’ve already established precedent by opposing tangential issue threats, such as McCain/Feingold “campaign finance reform.” Per the Political Victory Fund website, Democrat Mark Begich is still rated at A-, despite Begich testing the waters to throw gun owners under the bus after Newtown, despite his voting for confirming Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, and despite NRA pledging those votes would be scored.

A factoid CNN ISN'T reporting.

In other words, every new development in personal weapons technology will, by default, be denied to We the People by the very body charged with facilitating a citizen militia and expressly forbidden from infringing with the right of the people to keep and bear arms. That the authorities have it in common use won’t matter. So much for Founding intent. So much for freedom.

"Cold As It Gets." Dedicated to Mark Potok, Mike Lawlor, Dannell Malloy, Eric Holder, Harry Reid and all those who seem determined -- by their actions and appetites -- to start the next civil war.

Courtesy of a reader of Claire Wolfe's blog, my attention was drawn to this haunting song by Patsy Griffin, "Cold As It Gets." I had never heard it before. It struck me forcibly that someone living today, a child perhaps, will be softly singing this sometime in the near future, her hands cradling a rifle, squatting in a sniper's hide, waiting for her target to present itself -- someone responsible for setting in motion the events that took her loved ones in the next American civil war. So I'd like to dedicate this to Mark Potok, Mike Lawlor, Dannell Malloy, Eric Holder, Harry Reid and all those who seem determined -- by their actions and appetites -- to start that civil war. It is by their hands that their futures -- and all of ours -- will be written. I pray that they understand that before it is too late. But that's not the way to bet.
"Cold As It Gets"
by Patty Griffin
To the end of the Earth, I'll search for your face
For the one who laid all of our beauty to waste
Threw our hope into Hell and our children into the fire
I am the one who crawled through the wire
I am the one who crawled through the wire
There's a million sad stories on the side of the road
Strange how we all just got used to the blood
Millions of stories that'll never be told
Silent and froze in the mud
Silent and froze in the mud
I know a cold as cold as it gets
I know a darkness that's darker than cold
A wind that blows as cold as it gets
Blew out the light of my soul
Blew out the light of my soul
I dream in my sleep, I dream in my days
Of some sunny street not so far away
Where up in a window a curtain will sway
And you and I'll meet down below
You and I'll meet down below
I know a cold as cold as it gets
I fight a war, I may never see won
I live only to see you live to regret
Everything that you done
Everything that you done
Everything that you done

A less than optimal result. Stupid is as stupid does.

So, there I was, clicking along on my keyboard, and I had one task left undone from Friday -- I recently pulled an inventory of ammunition at the house here (NEVER keep all your eggs in one basket) when I realized that some 12 Gauge birdshot ammunition that I had put up for investment (I don't hunt anymore) in some old wooden crates were in need of reinforcement (lids would not stay securely clamped when handled). So I borrowed a nylon strapping machine and set about banding the boogers.
Now its been more than few years since I was a warehouse manager and my recollection of the procedures were a little hazy but I worked it out. I had four crates to band, no problemo. Well, one problemo. On the third box the handle under full tension got away from my grip, and I was leaning down into the work and faster than you can say "concussion" the handle flipped up and smacked me in the temple/right eyebrow area. Stunned, it took me a minute to realize that I was bleeding like a stuck pig from a cut on the outer aspect of the eyebrow. I had a heckuva headache for a while, but that's subsided. This morning I have a beautiful shiner in my right eye extending all the way over to the bridge of the nose and down to the cheek. Good thing I had the video documentary interview last week. Good news? The blow bent but did not break my much-insulted eyeglasses. (You may recall my faceplant a couple of weeks ago.) Being wire-rims I was able to bend them back into place.
Anyway, I'm back at it this morning so I'll something of my own for y'all later.

'Government monopoly on force,' as demanded by CSGV, on display in Ferguson, MO

You want to know why, the Bundy ranch guardians were able to make the government back down, while Ferguson residents remain under the government's jackboots, CSGV? It's because at the Bundy ranch, the government knew that they would not enjoy a "monopoly on force"--that they would pay for their excesses in blood, more of it than they were willing to lose. The Ferguson cops, on the other hand, clearly like their overwhelming edge in firepower. That's your "government monopoly on force," CSGV. Own it.

RIP, Marine.

Connecticut response to gun law challenge reveals plan to gut Second Amendment

If the “in common use at the time” standard is held to recognize anything different than what is available to soldiers in the field, every new development in personal weapons technology will, by default, be denied to the people by the very body charged with facilitating a citizen militia and expressly forbidden from infringing with the right of the people to keep and bear arms. At that point, each new infringement can and will be used to diminish commonality, itself an unspecific and arbitrary standard subject to further political distortions in order to ban anything the state deems in its interests to eliminate.

"Images coming from Ferguson, Mo., reveal unfiltered, uncomfortable truths."

Police brutality, caught on tape so many times now that it is a wonder more communities haven’t erupted in outrage like Ferguson, can only be dismissed if the citizenry is adept at disbelieving what it sees. The video tape gone viral on Facebook or YouTube, we are told again and again, doesn’t capture the context of the beating, the tasering or the shooting. It must be interpreted by professionals; you can’t believe what you see. We’ll form a task force and get back to you . . . after you’re no longer interested, or angry.
Many of us, children of the Cold War and still keenly aware of the great propaganda regimes of the violent 20th century, have been so well trained, for so long, to disbelieve images that we are at the mercy of our own robust sense of suspicion. To be a sophisticated consumer of images, we became reflexive skeptics; that same reflexive skepticism is the thing that propaganda manipulates.
And Rand Paul weighs in: We Must Demilitarize the Police

How's that "government monopoly of force" thing workin' out for you, CSGV?

CSGV tries to explain "only one" misconduct within the confines of their "government monopoly of force" worldview. "For years, we have differed with the pro-gun movement over the use of coercive force in a democratic society. It is our contention that states with unregulated private militias are rarely, if ever, functional. That said, the government’s “monopoly on force” must be subject to civilian control, and it comes with tremendous responsibility to adhere to democratic principles of good governance. The Ferguson Police Department has breached their responsibility under any test. . ."
The situation in Ferguson should also be cause for reflection on the continuing arms race between civilians and law enforcement in our country. We must recognize that Ferguson is not the norm. The overwhelming majority of law enforcement officers are good men and women who are legitimately concerned about the type of firepower they are now being confronted with on America’s streets. This arms race is making our neighborhoods more dangerous and benefitting only one party: the gun industry, which sees continuing escalation as a business opportunity. We must all come together—civilians and law enforcement alike—to curb the proliferation of military-style firepower in our society.
They misspelled "benefiting."

"2 gun stores near Ferguson say sales are soaring." And we should be surprised?

When civic order breaks down, even limousine liberals purchase weapons. "People are coming in with fear in their eyes and they're saying they need something to protect their house," said Steven King, owner of Metro Shooting Supplies, a gun shop in the St. Louis suburb of Bridgeton. "They're scared to death."

Life imitates art. There is a reason that Stephen King chose Las Vegas as Satan's post-plague temporal capitol.

Police entered the restaurant and told patrons there to leave, the reporters wrote on Twitter after their release. The police then asked Lowery and Reilly for their identification and, according to the reporters, arrested them because they weren't packing their bags fast enough. Greenwald Exposes NPR, NSA, & Media Matters

Received this email and accompanying links from a faithful reader:
What happened to the George W Bush days when leftists were supposedly against Big Brother and mocked the neo-cons for fear mongering with the terrorism threat?
"NPR Is Laundering CIA Talking Points to Make You Scared of NSA Reporting."
NPR aired a report that terrorists have been able to defeat NSA spying attempts thanks to the Snowden reporting. The only problem? NPR neglected to mention that the company that was the source for the report receives millions of dollars from the CIA and federal government!
NPR defenders might say it was just sloppy reporting, but the article demonstrates that she already knew this from a report two years ago. What is also unfortunate for the "reporter" is that the Snowden docs themselves detail how years before any leak by Snowden that terrorists knew about NSA monitoring and had developed encryption techniques. No wonder why the government and media did not want these files revealed! What BS artist likes to be proven wrong?
Lastly, I thought the left also opposed questioning patriotism and loyalty to one's nation from the Red Scare era or the Bush era? The regime loving and 2nd amendment hating Media Matters pulled off an impressive display of mccarthyism with these tweets attacking Greenwald and Snowden from the creepy Oliver Willis:

Say what? "Republicans Endorse Heavily Armed Men Attempting To Wage War With The U.S. Government."

Gentle readers, Herschel Smith draws our attention via this column, "The Three Percenter’s Make-Believe Army," to this collectivist screed with the improbable title, "Republicans Endorse Heavily Armed Men Attempting To Wage War With The U.S. Government"
Some brave commie writing under the pen name of Rmuse writes, among other sly falsehoods, conflations, smears of guilt by disassociation and outrageous lies, that:
The Three Percenter Club’s founder, Mike Vanderboegh, claims the “movement’s core belief is a willingness to offer violent resistance to the United States government,” something definitely NOT in the U.S. Constitution they support.
"Three Percenter Club"? There is a Facebook page by that name but it doesn't belong to me so I can hardly be said to be its "founder." And the quote, although attributed to me in quotation marks, happens to be something I never said. You will certainly not find it in the linked source he cites.
The writer claims that we are all delusional and inhabiting a make-believe world. However "make-believe," as Herschel points out, is in the eye of the beholder:
What? Never heard of fourth generation warfare? Without thinking clearly about it, the readers demonstrate first of all why such a movement is necessary (they would just as soon see their countrymen crushed under tanks and gunships), second that they have no conception whatsoever of what such a civil war would look like (how bitter it would be and how it would affect their own lives), and finally that it isn’t guns they oppose – it is guns in the wrong hands, or in other words, hands of those with whom they disagree.
I’ve always said that liberals and progressives (this web site advertizes that they are all about “real liberal politics”) aren’t libertarian or enlightened in the least. All progressives are collectivists and totalitarians. This is the sad and contemptible offspring of relativism.
For readers at Politicus USA, I won’t try to educated you on the finer points of the foundations for civil society, but I will simply say to you the following: You have no idea what’s coming, how bad it’s going to be, or how to stop it once it begins. And there is nothing make-believe about men who are morally committed, called by God, and dedicated to the very end to ideals you treat as a mere punchline.

Congressional ‘progressives’ only anti-gun when it comes to citizens

The insatiable lust for control helps explain why, per the GovTrack government transparency website, the bill has been parked in the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the prognosis is that it only has a “9% chance of getting past committee [and a] 3% chance of being enacted.” Those in power have no intention of doing anything but increasing it for themselves and lessening it for those they “serve.” Based on the results of 29 bill proponents out of a 435-voting member House of Representatives, that sorry assessment includes most “Republicans” as well.

Yeah, let's have a public debate about whether the Education Department needs a SWAT team.

Jonathan Kay’s Hoplophobia Forged by Bigotry, Ignorance and Hysteria

Jonathan Kay of Canada’s National Post is weighing in on America’s “gun culture”. Before asking what in Hades a Canadian could know about the subject, know that he spent two years studying the conspiracist subculture on his way to authoring Among The Truthers, so his current polemic, America’s firearms culture forged by paranoia, racism and civil rights unrest, is based in part upon that experience.

"The Right’s Wrong Reaction to the Missouri Shooting"

“Justice,” Benjamin Franklin suggested, “will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.” There is no virtue to playing judge, jury, and executioner before the facts are known. Nor is there anything to be achieved by turning a dispassionate process into a partisan game. No doubt, as in the cases of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, we will witness sects forming where they do not belong. Conservatives should resist indulging in this at all costs. But they should also resist appearing uninterested. By asking those who wish to talk about authority what they think about civil society instead, many among us are giving off the impression that there is no circumstance in which Franklin’s outrage is going to be forthcoming — however clear-cut the guilt might be. The question of who guards the guardians pertains now as keenly as it ever has. The Right’s answer should be “we do” — and we’re happy to hang them high if we know that they have transgressed.

"Here. Hold my beer and watch this." Terminal stupidity and firearms a dangerous combination for some.

Exploding Targets A Dangerous Combination For Some
I can't say that I ever thought much of exploding targets, as most of them seem to be (a) deployed by what a friend of mine calls "range goobs," and are (b) more about low-budget Hollywood than seriously training for accuracy. And the collectivist enemy certainly pounces on anything that feeds the "gun owners are all stupid, drunken louts" meme. I mean, blowing up refrigerators? Really?

I refuse to summon up one twitch of an incipient tear for this failed collectivist propagandist.

Anti-violence activist’s ‘gun death’ shows cynical ‘progressive’ exploitation

Isn’t that just like Balkanizers, teabaggers and bitter clingers? Worried about protecting those not paying their “fair share” instead of joining in the blood dance over another “senseless child gun death”?

More "justice for Trayvon."

Armed Guards with AR-15′s Save North St. Louis Businesses From Looters

The St. Louis Tattoo Studio and County Guns businesses share a storefront in a Florissant strip mall less than ten minute drive from the epicenter of last night’s riots in Ferguson. Their stores were not looted.

Bloomberg gets a "Hickey"

Hickenlooper wrote “long…fawning” letter to former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg
“Actually, watching what Michael Bloomberg did for New York, as Mayor, it made me love Bloomberg News in a way nothing else really could. When DeBlasio took over, and basically (unintelligible) people trashed Mayor Bloomberg, I got a whole, long…fawning letter up to Bloomberg just saying how outrageous it was. And then just reciting what I thought he’d be remembered for, and every big city mayor that I know, thinks that he’ll go down as one of the greatest mayors, not just in New York, but in the history of the United States.”

That damned black dog of Churchill's just won't go away.

My apologies. I have a half dozen articles (and other projects) hanging fire because I'm having an extended visit with Churchill's uninvited black dog. If I could shoot the ghostly bastard, I would do it. Keep me in your prayers. More later.

Nixon vs. Obama: Yes, Nixon was bad but Obama is worse

While Nixon was known for his “Enemies List,” the former head of the National Security Agency’s global digital data gathering program says that Obama also has an enemies list stored by keyword, which has been used to take down perceived political enemies such as General Petraus. During his re-election campaign Obama even brazenly posted his enemies list on-line as a not-so-subtle threat not to donate to his opponents. How Nixon’s critics would have howled if he had publicly targeted Sen. George McGovern’s donors.
