You know, the more chaos in the streets (jihadi attacks, Ferguson riots, etc.), the more popular the armed citizenry is going to become with folks who previously were hoplophobes.

I agree completely with your comments Mike, and any tax feeder collectivist who try's to disarm us should be considered as someone trying to kill us and our families, since leaving someone without the God given right to defend themselves is no different that potentially causing someone's death in my opinion. When someone tries to disarm you, treat them as you would anyone trying to kill you.
Time to make sure all your ammo has been smeared with lard. Hollow points should be able to hold a nice little dab in the nose of the projectile.
Remember, boys and girls, the only Jehadi you absolutely KNOW won't try to saw your (or your loved one's) head off with a butcher knife is a dead one. If they're breathing, they're a potential threat.
While I agree with your basic premise, Mike, it should also be pointed out that the wackos are also proving the emperor has no clothes; i.e. cops are NOT invincible warrior titans of the street. Imagine if you will the results of your average cop who happens to have a well documented "attitude" problem towards the unwashed and several individuals of similar mindset just "happening" to be in his vicinity at the same time and "Oh, look a batch of 2 x 4's just happen be nearby." Even if he has a partner nearby (and most cops as we well know operate alone nowadays) the speed of a surprise attack is a great advantage. You can do a helluva beat down in only a minute and be gone before any backup shows up. Bad cops(and you know who you are) should take note of this dynamic. Unfortunately I think the most obvious result will be cops quicker on the draw.
"The man was hiding behind a bus shelter" It would be fairly likely that the attacker had observed the times/routes of NYPD and planned the ambush in advance.
"The officers were posing for a photo when the man pounced" Basic tradecraft fail. I have a strong sense that the photo op was a disruptive/distraction event. It is a tactic used by even lowly stickup men and carjackers, I would expect the same from a real enemy. Playing directly into the egotism of NYPD seems almost obvious from outside.
Ambusher attacks 1:4 and gets hits on 50% with a cheap melee weapon. This just illustrates the power of ambush as a tactical element.
"A 29-year-old bystander who was struck by a bullet in the lower back was also taken to a hospital. Her condition was not known." NYPD marksmanship is what it is, and this poor young woman will probably be maimed as a result, but we'll never hear about it, as some people are more equal than others.
Well, the NYC police marsmanship does seem to be improving. Last year they shot two bystanders (with three shots fired) and missed the target, and two years ago they hit NINE bystanders. Only one this time.
The problem they have is the 8-10# trigger pull required on police pistols, which they have as a "safety" measure. Accuracy with that high of a trigger pull is near impossible.

"...investigators do not believe that Thompson, a Muslim convert, was driven by any radical Islamic views."
Denying reality doesn't alter reality, it simply makes one incapable of dealing with it.

My rifle smells of bacon! Especially when hot!
Lets analyze with the information given:
"The man was hiding behind a bus shelter" It would be fairly likely that the attacker had observed the times/routes of NYPD and planned the ambush in advance.
