Nolan Finley of the Detroit News doesn't want us to scare the white folks.

Gun rights advocates should avoid showdown

I'm as enthusiastic about guns and the Second Amendment as anyone. But I think the gun rights advocates who are pushing the issue of open carry during the Arts, Beats & Eats festival in Royal Oak risk doing their cause more harm than good.

Certainly, organizers of the festival shouldn't have written into the contract with the city a ban on weapons that runs contrary to state law. It was unnecessary.

But threatening to show up at the festival fully armed is also an unnecessary provocation by the gun rights folks. Not everyone appreciates guns as much as we do. A show of arms will only set off the anti-gun crowd and prompt attempts to limit Second Amendment rights. Who needs that?

The best way to protect Second Amendment rights is to exercise them with common sense, and do as little as possible to panic those who are afraid of guns.

Your Highness, I am a good and sober subject. I exercise the rights you have granted me in your beneficence in a way that does not irritate your Majesty’s press, nor panic the meek amongst thy other subjects.

Pathetic....

"threatening to show up"?? How about "promising to show up"? Big difference. This guy is not honest. He is a lying, left-bent jackass who should have his keyboard taken away from him.

This what the author said:

"The best way to protect Second Amendment rights is to exercise them with common sense, and do as little as possible to panic those who are afraid of guns."

But this is what s/he meant:

"The best way to protect Second Amendment rights is to appease those childishly afraid of inanimate objects, and forget about your silly 'rights.'"

Yet I wonder - COULD the rule have been a sort of 'tool' for local law enforcement to use, NOT against RKBA folk, but against gang-bangers, 'gangstas' and thugs, who sometimes show up at such gatherings and change the atmosphere to one of unease? Here, whenever there is a weekend long music / street festival, in most cases by Sunday night there have been at least a few knifings and assaults, sometimes a shooting...
I can certainly understand the open carry advocates wanting a show of force to tell the promoters that they will not accept such rules. Yet again, I also wonder if the aim of the rule was those who have mischief in mind. Hoon knows.

In Richmond, VA, last weekend at the Carytown Watermelon Festival, someone was stabbed.
The news coverage of the festival itself showed many, many booths of watermelon vendors with many, many long KNIVES each for cutting the melons, of course. Right there in easy reach of festivalgoers... No one suggested that they not have knives from now on.
A shame the average person equates visible gun with violent criminal or political extremist. That's ground that we've ceded to them, with the help of that largest gun rights organization in the world. As long as you can get a PERMIT to carry concealed, they think it's OK. Except, it's hard and costs money to get a permit to do what crimnals do without a thought.
Visibly armed citizens just MIGHT deter knifemen like serial stabber Elias Abuelazam. Not knowing who's carrying concealed would help, too.
Time to take it back.

Typical bedwetter...nobody seems to mind the gangbangers showing up in the evening hours during these festivals....and you can bet your ass they're armed...

Don't show up with a gun and then he wins. You might as well sell it then as you have no use for it. Time to make the wabbits that we are hunting very nervous.

Or: "We keep poking this bear, and it gets mad. What gives?"

I agree with you. This can only provoke a push back like in California which can cause the loss of that privilege or right which ever you call it. The result is the same.

Notice, not one mention of him expressing concern about the continuing Goverment and police monopoly of violence; the mini-Wacos, Ruby Ridge and Katrinas happening, and growing worse, each day.

We already tried, compromise. It didn't work out so well for the Constitution, or our rights, which are supposedly guaranteed under that document. Now we find that we should, in some people's opinion, be reasonable on MANY other issues of the Constitution and our "rights" as well.

Every time we back up we lose more freedom and gain more regulation and regulators, which we then get the "honor" of paying for as well.

The answer is no, and I have adequate expletives and descriptors, if further explanation becomes necessary.

But I'm getting real tired of talking,

I'm really tired of explaining things that only yesterday, were understood by nearly everyone and suddenly as if by magic, have totally different explanations and meanings.

I'm super tired of the lies and propaganda and lack of debate and Marxists and politicians and the entertainment and news media complex.

And I've been thinking.....

Shall we ask if its ok to breathe or other essential rights?

I am sure keeping quiet is exactly how people gain rights, why all the founders had to do was lay low and not tick off old George...if we reamin quiet perhaps they will allow us a drink of water too!

Hey Nolan,

I have an idea; why don't we keep the people carrying guns in a special area? In fact, they can have separate restroom facilities, separate drinking fountains and separate parking lots. Oh, they'll still have all the same access and everything as everyone else, they'll just be kept away from those people that might object to their guns. Separate, but equal. Get it?

Yes, because pandering to the hysterical phobias of luddite hoplophobes has really worked so well for us over the last fifty or so years. As has pretending that the lust for power of collectivist political hacks can ever be slowed by attempts at appeasement. And Nolan, gun rights advocates are not the people you should be hectoring about avoiding a showdown. We're not the ones seemingly bent on doing everything humanly possible to make a showdown inevitable.

Perhaps, Nolan, you'll take on this topic again when your uterus isn't bothering you quite so much and you're thinking more clearly.

A recent Gallup poll says only 25% of the people trust the media, and that's mostly among the under-20s. As they get older and wiser, it drops, says one older and wiser commenter.
Journalists self-identify as liberal ... what was it, 86% of the time. Maybe it was higher. And those are the ones who REALIZE they're liberals. Many think they're moderates, but their personal opinions on things? Hoo boy.

Hey, Mr Nolan Finley...

Shut up. Now.

A gun wouldn't be such a shocking thing to this limp-wristed, hoplophobic culture if idiots like you would shut up and stand for our rights. I mean, Rosa Parks could have walked to the back of the bus, right, in order to avoid provoking the whites. Right? Would that have been your counsel to her? I mean, why exercise a civil right if it offends someone? You need to just go re-assume the position and lick the fat, corpulent, pus-covered hand of your master. May god forget you are my countryman.

You DON'T treasure the right outlined in the 2nd Amendment as much as I do, or you wouldn't let such idiocy proceed from your mouth. Don't ever presume that you and I share any of the same value system.

I live in a state where open carry is normal and common. No problems here. It's people like you, and those you wish to shelter from me exercising a CIVIL RIGHT, who cause the problem.

You have no understanding of the dynamics by which rights become crimes and are effectively lost (although when gun ownership becomes a crime, I won't lose my right -or my vote- I will resist). You are clueless as to the means of non-violently preserving our rights. Why don't you just hand them over now?

Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you, Finley. Shut up.

That is all. Carry on.

"A show of arms will only set off the anti-gun crowd and prompt attempts to limit Second Amendment rights."

Um, actually, no. I wear a full-sized, 5" barrel pistol openly every day, everywhere except for the occasional gun free zone I choose to disarm myself to enter (rarely). Sometimes I conceal it (no permit required) if I feel like it, but I don't have to.

My state has, arguably, the best gun climate in the nation. We exercise our inalienable firearms rights as we wish, and the hoplophobes and "don't rock the boat" folks like you just have to get over it.

Yeah, go crawl back to your hole.

Pansies like this make me want to puke! I just love all the... "I'm the biggest 2A supporter, BUT..." Common sense, Ha, you make me laugh.

We didn't have to flaunt our 2A rights for the anti-gun to take away our guns in the past, and we sure as heck don't have to flaunt them now in order to make the anti-gun try to take away even more of our gun rights! Hell flaunting them is the only thing that lets us KEEP OUR GUNS you idiot!
