Unfortunately, Sweden's socialists are at the vanguard of trying to eliminate cash. Particularly in Southern Sweden, cash payments are looked upon with disfavor and suspicion. Government keeps rounding off zeros, and eliminating smaller value coins and banknotes, so someone else gets enriched because of the lack of "change", which electronic payments were supposed to be the cure for. Merchants and others are encouraged to be suspicious of, and not accept, large value banknotes. The rest of EU is quickly falling into line. People in much of EU no longer have financial privacy, despite election of governments claiming to respect the right to privacy. Financial privacy, and a precious metal based currency are both aspects of a free world and markets.
I keep expecting the feds here to get rid of pennies any time. The darned things cost WWWAAAAAYYYYYYYY more to make than they're worth. What I expect the feds to do is round every sale to the next higher nickle or dime. The pennies that would have gone to the consumer as change go to the FedGov instead. Back in the early days of computerized banking there were stories of computer crooks siphoning off the pennies in bank transfers. Supposedly it made the crooks millions and was virtually invisible. Imagine if the Feds started doing that. I can see the bill's title being something along the lines of "The Currency Simplification and Transaction Regularization Act".
