"Gun owner saved cop from attack by 'kids.'"

"He had the gun in his hand, but he didn't point it at the kids, he just told them to back off," Chitwood said. "If this guy didn't come out and come to the aid of the officer, this officer would have had significant problems." The 35-year-old gun owner, who has a concealed-carry permit, kept the group of teens at bay until responding officers arrived, Chitwood said.

It is good to see an article like this posted. Mass media often ignores cases like this. It sounds like the school and community need to address their hoodlum problem. It would be helpful if media referred to criminal youth as "hoodlums or something similar. Criminals try to hide in categories such as "troubled youth", when they are nothing but street criminals. Congratulations to the neighborhood resident with his gun. Saving people from serious bodily injury usually requires display or use of deadly force.

I live in Maine. Chitwood used to be the Chief of Police in Portland, ME.

I personally heard him testify at a legislative hearing on proposed gun legislation in Maine. Believe me he is as strong an "anti-gun" opponent as anyone I have heard.

Hard to believe he would give credit to the armed citizen for what he did in this incident.

Maybe he has learned something!
