Defying Evil: Albert Camus and His Century
“None of the evils that totalitarianism claims to cure is worse than totalitarianism itself.”
There were several Camus titles on the reading list that Dr. Richter left for me, but I am ashamed to say that I cannot with certainly recall them all. The Rebel was there, certainly, and The Plague, and I'm pretty sure The Myth of Sisyphus, but other than that . . . Of all the losses in the disorder, financial and otherwise, following my divorce from the Wicked Witch of The North and my relocation to Alabama, Dr. Richter's list (which was tucked inside his gift of the first English language edition of The Road to Serfdom) seems to me to be the unkindest cut of all. I will try to reconstruct it some day soon.
