Production delays & "The Virgins."

I was persuaded by readers that I trust that I needed to ditch the old Dell laptop after the TSA played with it.  Hard drive was ground up to prevent being set up on whatever BS charge they thought they could manufacture.  Had to spend $400 on a cheap replacement at local store chosen randomly.  It will get me through the next little bit until I get home and can do better, hopefully, in the near future.  Thanks for your patience in dealing with the delays on my emails, etc.  Hopefully I can get the new one up and running tomorrow after I make it to Indiana.  Will be at the NRA convention, coming in Friday morning, staying a ways out on Friday night, then leaving Saturday night to return to Ohio and thence on Sunday back to Alabama.  Can't guarantee I'll be able to post in the morning but I will try.  You'll like the replacement ball cap I procured for the convention.  The prags won't.  ;-)

It is desert tan, with a III in the center.  Above that is: "Bundy Ranch Siege."  Below is "It ain't about cows."  On the back is: "Virgin River Volunteers."  Since it will be immediately in commerce, no one else can steal the trademark.  after I post the pictures (hopefully tomorrow) I'll tell you where you can get them.  I am told that some Three Percenters out in NV on the line are already calling themselves "the Virgins," with one telling me they ought to adopt the name, "Vanderboegh's Virgins."  Anybody with the stones to wear a hat or a patch like that deserves kudos for his bravery. or lack of sense.

Mike, it stinks deep-sixing your Jurassic laptop, but it was probably a tactically smart move. I stopped carrying mine as a professional pilot back in 2009 when the customs officers started taking them from corporate aircrew for 10 minutes (or more) to "inspect" when flying back into CONUS.
One thumb-drive full of child porn images quickly injected into anyone's PC and they're quite simply DONE.

Smart move on the 'puter. Damn good advice from your friends. Never underestimate loathsome cunning of the neo-nazi's. They will stoop to any low, wallow in any filth, commit any perjury, to bring you down.

You might want to consider a lappy with no hard drive, running Linux off a 64+ gig USB stick. When you shut the machine off, the *encrypted* memory stick gets separated from the machine. Way fewer holes for the feds to exploit that way.

It's a shame when one's personal info hits the new media. With the right circulation, one's life takes a drastic turn into hell. Ain't that a bitch.

I hate to be "that tech guy", but someone in your line of work needs a Chromebook. All the crap is stored "in the cloud", or on microSD cards. MicroSD is small enough that you could embed like 20 32GB chips inside a tube of chapstick. Truecrypt on the microSDs, and encrypted VPN for your chromebook.

You can also get a droid device that plugs into a TV with an HDMI port, and links up to a wifi hotspot. Those are about $40 at Menards, Frys, and probably WalMart soon enough. Sold as a SmartTV adapter.

Also worth reading for a little tradecraft update would be Cory Doctrow's novel "Little Brother". http://craphound.com/littlebrother/download/ It's a good primer on what could happen, and how to cover one's ass.

how did the TSA play with your laptop?

They should not be touching it if flying domestic.

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/04/24/us/politics/rancher-proudly-breaks-the-law-becoming-a-hero-in-the-west.html

He said he would continue holding a daily news conference; on Saturday, it drew one reporter and one photographer, so Mr. Bundy used the time to officiate at what was in effect a town meeting with supporters, discussing, in a long, loping discourse, the prevalence of abortion, the abuses of welfare and his views on race.

“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

Might it be available elsewhere?

http://www.cnet.com/news/the-right-way-to-destroy-an-old-hard-drive/

When it comes to hard drives, good on you for grounding it up. You especially can't be too careful.

For all you know there were pictures of child porn planted on your computer, or there was a list of drug-dealers planted on your computer, God-only-knows what. Best to just destroy it and never look back.

The trick is to make the drive unspinnable.

Also in the future: Carry-on. That's what I've always done for all of my luggage.

If you didn't already do so, or if someone else on here needs to do it in the future, ground up the hard drive, and burn it, and then scatter the ashes into the four winds. Put them into totally different locations for disposal at different times.

Even feel free to go for a drive into the middle of nowhere, and release the ashes out the window of your car while traveling at 65 miles per hour.

I do similar things with things like old credit/debit cards and old driver's licenses that I don't want people to get ahold of: Cut it up into little pieces, and some pieces go in the trash, some go in recycling, some are burned, some are buried deep in the ground.

If you really want to write something down that no agency can hack: Pen and paper.

All new computers have spyware built in so I hope you know someone who can override that - and next time you fly, don't check it.

For those of you implying that you should only worry if the Feds actually have your computer out of your sight, PLEASE understand that Microsoft, Google, and Apple - at the very least - have given the FedPigs backdoors into their software which allows the FedPigs (and any local "Law Enforcement" they have shared the info with) to READ anything on your computer, WRITE anything to a file on your computer, and READ your keystrokes as you type. WITHOUT THEM EVER PHYSICALLY TOUCHING YOUR COMPUTER. The software gives them root access which they can use WHENEVER your computer is connected to the Internet. That means the Chromebook will give you NO protection whatsoever. And the "cloud" is fully accessible to NSA and the FedPigs at will WITHOUT ANY WARRANTS.

If you REALLY care about what they can do, you need to do significantly more research about who is currently doing what to whom.

Mr. Vanderboegh,

Have you considered the elegance and cost effectiveness of the Raspberry Pi when configured as a desktop unit? The "B" model is only $35. You probably have all the other parts on hand.

Or, perhaps Tin Hat Linux...
