It would take an aweful lot of experience to decipher the output of those. Did anyone look at the 'results' of the output?.
I'm not looking for a tail number on the Predator, but being able to see it would be nice without a degree in dopler deciphering.
Also, the output would be readily DF'able, and your a$$ toast if they were looking for signals.
But, it IS cool that someone can build this on their kitchen table, and with the right software and tuning, might be used for more than science fair exibits. But right now, it IS just science fair exibit material.
Oh, and it might work for sterilizing the opposition if close enough ;-) Maybe disrupting the Active Denial Systems with a pulse to overload it. Or.... You gotta start somewhere, tho.
My senior project in engineering school was very similar, sans the coffee cans. Doppler radar is ridiculously easy to build these days, with all the parts necessary from satellite TV and WiFi extender parts. One thing that's missing from SHTF novels like "Absolved", "Patriots" , and "Unintended Consequences" is a "tech guy" character who knows how to cobble stuff like this together. Your militia group needs a guy like that (like me), too.
Build the transmit portion only. When the SHTF, point it up into the sky out in the boonies where no one will get hurt and let the Feral Gov't waste missiles on it.
Predator might be more easily located via thermal imaging devices from FLIR and others. Slaved to a global mount controlled by a laptop, and set to scan the sky in regular patterns, you wouldn't have to break your neck looking up.
Sans predator scenario, let's address practical aspects in SHTF neighborhood watch.
Is this something which could be hidden and powered with solar panel and could transmit a wireless signal to my laptop at home a block away? to alert me of roving hordes?

Practical app:
Night time range finder.
Direction of movement of object viewed.
Outline of the object, helps in identification.
A handheld Doppler radar could conceivably be used on high ground to detect moving objects, along with direction and speed of travel.
Assuming it works.
If nothing else, sounds like a good Early Warning system for when The Shit Hits The Fan.

Assuming they're sufficiently cheap to build (they look easily transportable), they could be used to spoof DFs.

Interferometry.
Google it.
Especially pay attention to the bits that talk about something called "Talos."

I built a Wi-Fi waveguide antenna out of a coffee can. Pretty cool that you can do radar too. I bet you can do even better with a spare cable TV dish.
