Praxis/Logistics: Water

Received this email from a long-time Three Percenter:
Mike, I've owned and used a Simple Pump hand pump for over 6 years. I'll give it a solid thumbs up. http://www.simplepump.com/
My well's draw depth is over 120 feet. The hand-stroke is easy, even my wife has no problem using this unit. You can co-locate the pump on your well head with an electric pump and use the same casing if you have a wide enough bore. ( Simple Pump's web site covers all of this in detail.)
This is one of the few hand pumps in the world built to pump water from over 300 feet down. I'm constantly amazed at the deer in the headlights look I get from most prep-minded patriots when I ask them if they have a reliable supply of drinking water that is NOT dependent on their city mains or electrical power.
Huh ?
Yeah, water isn't "tacti-cool" or fun to talk about, but it's a fact that the average person will not last 4 days without water. Ask anyone who has humped a pack how important water is.
Semper Fi,
Joe

thanks for this info. Been looking for something to take the place of running a generator for the well in an extended emergency and this looks good.

I have a simple pump. Static level 220'. It works fine, takes about a hundred pumps to prime.

a solar pump setup works well in this part of the country.

At least for stock tanks.

A very impressive accessory for the prepper/patriot. Another thing that is imperative for good water, is activated carbon. Just because it comes out of the ground does not make it good to drink. Abandoned wells in the country are usually contaminated with a lot of things and smell is one I can't get past as many times animals have fallen onto them and rotted. Making a homemade filter is possible but taste and smell will be eliminated with activated charcoal/carbon. I have a 5 gallon bucket of it and a couple of other smaller containers with it. Ebay usually has it, or if you know someone who works at the water dept you can pick it up cheap.

Katadyn water filter. Standard issue for U.S. Spooks, long duration over-watch snipers and Special Ops in places where the local water quality sucks.

Simple Pump is a good item IF your well is shallow (under 150'). We had one at 250'and your arms would end up looking like the Incredible Hulk if you had to rely on pumping your own water by hand. The solar motor burned up.
For deep wells, Grundfos pump is the way to go.

Th gpm output with human power seems hysterically optimistic. A person might be able to sustain for one hour around 50-150 watts output, 746 watts = 1 hp, so less than 0.20 hp would be achievable. SIXTY strokes/min? Really? Try it for five gpm output.

Realistically the pump output for a very short time MIGHT be as high as the 1/5hp dc unit, about 1-2 gpm at best seems to me.

Although perhaps a worthwile device, albeit very expensive, don't expect to water yer crops or stock with this. a better approach might be a windmill, IMHO.

Nothing against pumps if you have a well. I grew up in a house where we got water with a hand pump. However, if you're near a river, that might be a better source. You'll still need some kind of filter, and a means for transporting a container from the river to your location.
