Saw those once back a galaxy ago, reaction the same ("please make it go away"). But the services have turned out solid operators, as well as shooters, from a general population for some time.
From a praxis perspective, whether you are in radio or not, there is value to learning Morse Code. It can be used with lights or anything else you can short - the original binary data stream.
Also, as any operator knows, when the solar stuff knocks the voice bands out, Morse using CW with less power will get through. Lots of practice keys & oscillator box combos out there. Learn the code as just another tool in the kit if you like to think of it that way. You don't need to be fast, you need to be readable.
