The conspiracy thinker in me says, hmmmm. We know that big business is in bed with big gov. We also know that big gov is moving in many "under the radar" and overt ways to enact gun control. Destruction of firearms through loads that can damage the gun is a pretty nifty trick....disable the gun and injure the operator all at the same time. Now, that is one crafty way to enact back-door gun control! Sorry for my cynicism, but I don't trust anyone at this point.
As a side note; to all you folks who are shooting hand-loads: the importance of meticulous loading procedures is of the utmost importance. And to all of you who are receiving hand-loads from friends, best to be sure the source of your hand-loads is reliable and precise in their methodology.
Posts on other boards opined that the offending cases could've easily been squirreled away and just recently started to be used.
I have personal stock WCC M855 bought in '09 that I haven't even touched.
It doesn't take but a few bad rounds of ammo for a whole lot to be withdrawn. Probably that's all that's been found and the vast majority of the ammo has been fired with no ill effects.
Is it just my imagination, or have there been a rash of ammo recalls the last couple months? Winchester, especially, seems to be having much difficulty maintaining quality runs, though I think there was a Federal recall as well recently- can't find linked articles to it, however, so may just be imagination.
Still, with the way events have been escalating, I'm not at all certain I'd return to sender any ammo without immediate replacement by same vendor. Not that I distrust Winchester, or any maker, I do not trust the government to not be above blaqckmailing to get a large quantity of ammo off the streets.
But please, let's not say I'm paranoid. Not much, anyway.

Have 'em send it to you for disposal. I have a .22 caliber collect for the RCBS bullet puller :)
Close enough for (tyranical) Govt. work!
... hand it in to your nearest anti-gun Govt. agency?

I find the timing of this recall disturbing.

What's the date range on that ammo? There is a lot of loose ammo out there with no lot numbers....
Since these guys are producing ammo 24/7, possibly using new employees, maybe we shouldn't be surprised there are a few mistakes.
Quietman:
The headstamp will most probably be WCC 10 since the part of the lot number "10M" means the manufacture date is December 2010
Hasn't been the first time Winchester/Olin has made a bad run of ammo. For a few years, they were recalling .22lr every few months.
"lot number "10M" means the manufacture date is December 2010"
So this suspect stuff has been around for Two Years ... with few reports of blow-ups but something must have alerted them of problems?

Yep, seems that way.
