There are no obsolete weapons, only obsolete tactics.

Fair enough, but obsolete weapons haven't won many major battles since Isandlwana.

A good friend recently went on a hunt similar to one described in passing at the link...

He took a ~500# feral hog with a knife.

Not a primitive bow, a frigging KNIFE!

I don't need an "adrenaline rush" badly enough to take on a pure-evil critter with 6" tusks with a frigging KNIFE! I've SEEN what a pig like than can do to human flesh -- and it ain't pretty!

But... He apparently enjoyed himself, and wants to do it again next year...

To each his own, I guess...

All that said, I think the primitive/self-made bow and arrows-hunt is smart for a number of reasons - God forbid we'd ever need such skills, but if you DO need them, there's no substitute!

Anon, I have this to say about your friend who killed a 500lb hog with a knife (especially if he didn't tie it to a stick and make a spear):

He'd probably do well against any home invader, as long as he could make it to a kitchen drawer.

Winning a knife fight against a large wild animal is great practice for self defense. (losing a knife fight against a big hog, OTOH, doesn't do you much good at all)
