Other alternative--Some rope and the appropriate drill bit size for loose packed gear, knots on the inside and loop on the outside.
With a proper setup, the rope can stay on the outside too--loop it around the bottom and staple in place. The staples don't need to hold the entire weight, just keep the rope in place.
I also have a lock plate and loop I bought for one to replace the latch. I wanted to be able to lock it up. Lock, and a length of steel cable, with loops swaged on the ends. Wrap it around something, lock it in the lock with the lid closed, and it won't be going anywhere without some persuasion. Wouldn't take a whole lot of persuasion, but good enough for most things you'll run across. We used to do this with toolboxes in the AF--With the box locked up and secured to something, you can leave it there while going to lunch or something, and you don't need to worry about someone moving it or taking something.
