Praxis: Doing things the old fashioned way -- Lindsay's Catalogue of Technical Books
Just received in the mail box the latest Lindsay's Catalogue of Technical Books, which provides, according to its cover claim, "exceptional technical books published for the enlightenment of experimenters, inventors, tinkerers, mad scientists, 'Thomas Edison types' and individuals of high energy and intellect."
Go to the link above and hop around the reprints of 19th and early 20th century texts and you will quickly find a cumulative encyclopedia both of self-reliance and of how to rebuild a technological civilization in the wake of catastrophe.
Enjoy.

Lindsay's is one of the best publishers of how-to books. I have at least forty of their books. The Gingerly series of books deserve to be on the bookshelves of every 3%r as they show how to build a small machine shop largely from scrap materials.
I've bought quite a few books from Lindsay's. The Gingery books are great for the machinist.
Thanks for the reminder; I needed to get back on their mailing list (too many moves).
On the subject of old-fashioned knowledge, this site has digitized versions of ancient "how-to" books going back to even the 1700s. Very interesting reading.

Don't forget other important books such as The Household Cyclopedia, Where There Is No Doctor, and Ditch Medicine. All of them are free to download on the web.

Ordered my catalog just now. I have been doing some projects around here, but now I need an enclosed shop to do others and to protect the apparatuses (apparatii?) I wish to build and use in it.
Mike,
I checked in with Sipsey Streeters a few hours ago, followed your link to Lindsay's, and am just now getting back to you.
This could be the beginning of some mighty interesting reading and projects. Thanks for the tip.
