An excellent essay, but as poor as I am, my neighbors won't be able to expect a lot. Thankfully we all love our guns here in the Bluegrass State so I don't think that will be a problem.
Where I live, there's a better than 50% chance if I arm my neighbor, I'll end up taking one in the back. When the financial or other meltdown comes, the majority of the lemmings here in the People's Democratic Republic of Oregon will be looking to our governor, Ted the Red, to save them. True to the Castroite mentality in Salem, the hacks will initiate a Leninist policy of to each according to his needs from each according to his ability. Snitches, rats, cowards, and remoras will abound. Anyone with an SKS and a weeks supply of baked beans will be ratted off unless he/she has kept their mouth shut. My tactic will be to step back, watch, wait, and listen. I do not have the luxury of trusting my neighbors.
This is why I keep several old firearms even though I never use them anymore and have purchased much better gear for myself. Russian Mossin-Nagant rifles are very affordable. I have two and several thousand rounds of ammo (total investment of under $500) specifically reserved for arming trusted neighbors if needed.
However, I agree with the commentators who don't trust one or more of their neighbors and recognize they could be severe opsec risks. Some are crazy jerks while others are the marxist collectivist useful idiots like a late 30s white female neighbor who stated during the 2008 election that she would like to have Obama's baby.
I have one of those "problem" crazy jerk neighbors next door BUT fortunately (prayers answered) he bought another house and is moving this week.
Taylor H, your neighbor will thank you for helping them build a zip gun for themselves it the SHTF.

I think this is one to be careful with. Probably the only neighbors worth even thinking of arming are the same ones you've invited into your home multiple times. That is, the ones who share your values. But if they share your values, why aren't they already armed? Seems to leave a very small fraction worth arming... The rest are just destined for the great die-off.
If you think about it, this is a good kick in the pants for all of us: live in a place where you can trust your neighbors.

In my reading, I have deduced that you are a deranged man, and a terrible misrepresentatives of conservatives nationwide.
It shall be done.
Got that covered, and there are half a dozen backhoes in the neighborhood if any big holes need to be dug, roadblocks put up ...
