Malwarebytes only cleaned 15 files and then demanded that I buy the thing. Which would be fine but I don't have a credit card and it advises me that there are 250 more files to go. Am currently trying the Microsoft fix. If that doesn't work a friend has offered to come over this afternoon. Will try to soldier on in the meantime. At least the damn links from email is working again.

Could try the restore feature....even if you only restore to a week ago....as long as it's before when the problems started. Worked for me last time.
avast.com Just saying that a company that lives in virus central should have the best protection/cleaning software around.
I had that problem a year ago. For $29.00 subscription VIPRE anti-virus was the way to go. Their people got the trojan and malware from off site. Found out about Vipre from Boston T. Party's(Kenneth W.Royce) book One Nation Under Surveillance.
Morning! Love your site, so here is a little help to ensure you can keep logging on.
Majorgeeks.com has a ton of freeware that most people pay to use. Anti-virus, Malware removers as well as protection just about anything you need to clean it up. There is also forums that will help walk you through most situations. I have fixed mine and a host of friend's with the help of this site. They give you their "hot picks" and reviews for CNET... I don't even bother with Microsoft to be honest and have in a long time. Haven't paid for virus/malware protection or any other pc fixer in years!
Hope this helps,
Barb
One more thing...
Most will try to download malware fixers or anti-virus prg straight to the PC once they're infected. It won't work. Copy/download whatever you want to use to a CD from another computer including any "Kill" prg, disconnect from the net, shut down any anti-virus/malware/firewall you currently are running AND then install the program from the CD you made. Once you've done that run them, including the"Kill" prg, hook to the net update and run them again. May do you good to run in safe mode too...
PS: the flashing box that "looks" like Microsoft alerting you that your virus program is out of date and needs to be run is the culprit. Don't click it, just shut it down and restart.

CCleaner

Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html
Superantispyware
http://superantispyware.com/
Running these three in combination, all freeware editions, in safe mode do a pretty good job of eliminating unwelcome additions to the machine.
As far as MajorGeeks goes, I have used information in their forums to clean up three computers. Lots of good help there, for sure.
Once you get your computer cleaned up (or Windows reinstalled, if it comes down to it) you might wish to give Microsoft's own anti-virus program a try. It's called Microsoft Security Essentials, can be downloaded from the Microsoft website, and is free. I've been using it for several years now and am completely happy with it.
Spywareblaster is another worthwhile program to add to your computer. It's freeware and has been around for years. It works by adding thousands of websites to your Internet Explorer (or Mozilla Firefox) banned websites area, so that, should you inadvertently go to one of them, they can't harm you.
go to the microsoft website and get help. Give them remote access and they can help you. Why continue to worry with this when they can solve the problem?
What is the site it is taking you to? Is it something like Spyware SHeriff or something along those lines?
I hate what you are going through, but malwarebytes' policy has not changed since I started using it three years ago. The free version cleans all viruses it is able to, the only thing the pro version provides is real-time checking and scheduled virus scans. What you are probably looking at is the virus *simulating* a malwarebytes screen, and asking for money ... that would probably be sent to Malaysia or somewhere.
I am not affiliated with Malwarebytes, just an independent repairman for 18 years now(?). You really need to get a human there, with an different, uninfected machine to download and install whatever virus scanner. If you are downloading any virus software on that machine, it sounds like it is being intercepted on the download. I've even recently seen virus scanners "patched" by the virus during install from CD recently.
[For my money, malwarebytes pro version is the still the best anti-virus out there. I install it, and never see those customers again (until they buy new hardware).]
Good luck.
Unless you have some compelling need to run Windows, I'd suggest for your next computer (or even your current one) to install Ubuntu. Best part is, it's free.
It's close enough to Windows to be Windows, but without all of the malware issues (at least until its' installed base is large enough to attract attention, which is unlikely).
I think Avast is the best A/V software you can get for free. Far as spyware removal, try either Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) or SuperAntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/). Both have free editions that work very well.
Good luck. As others have said, you can also do a restore.
Ad Aware will clean your machine, and it's free.
(For PCs) I use it every month or so. You can get it free at Lavasoft.com
Mike,
I agree with Frank. Use avast.com. I use their free version and it WORKS. I've had two different computer professionals recommend avast because it works and its free. Can't get better than that. Good luck.
Gunship Cowboy
Try Spy-bot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html
Also, I think if you look around on their site the free malwarebytes is still available. You got the trial version somehow.
Great info here, keep on chipping away!
It's a scam. Had the same happen to me several weeks ago. A computer savy friend of mine told me not to use my credit card to buy the fix because once they get your card number they'll never leave you alone. Told me to do a system restore instead and to go back a week. It worked! Lousy bastards.
On-line cleaner by Trend Micro - House Call
Then Ad Aware by Lavasoft
Both are free,
Spybot is a free program that works great.
Spybot is a highly regarded safe program that is free and reliable. It will not betray you. FREE
Combofix

Mike,
I deal with this every freaking day at work. It is my job. What I sent you in the PDF file works.
Seconding what Griffin3 posted.
MWB is still my go to for crap like this.
Depending on how you install it will ask if you'd like to try a free version of the "full" (pay for MWB, but I've never seen it stop after a few.
Try running MWB in safe mode.
AVG is a great program, and free forever.
Spybot Search&Destroy is another.
Malwarebytes ought to be free... not sure what the story is on that one.
I agree with Frank about avast in the winworld, but the real answer is linux IMO. Any linux...slackware, ubuntu, whatever. It may seem daunting, but should be a piece of cake these days. Plus, you can keep the data you have, safely. And the price can't be beat.
All of the free products listed work, but I would suggest running Combofix. Google combofix download & make sure you download it fro9m bleepingcomputer.com & not combofix.org or any other variant website. Disable your current anti-virus & spyware protection. Run it. It may take a while, but generally it removes enough of the Malware that the other programs listed will now be of a use.
My daughter's laptop had the same virus as yours and the TDSSKiller is the only thing that fixed it. I went here and followed the instructions exactly and it worked.

This software is free and I depend on it. It is called malware Destroyer by EMCO. You will just love it.
yes, malwarebytes will not ask for money, other than to suggest you get their paid version. It will do all the cleaning it can for free, rest assured.
