Cheapest 5.56 out there?

I have a buddy who is looking to pick up a couple thousand 5.56. Does anybody have their finger on the best price on brass cased stuff these days? (He doesn't like Russian steel-case.)

PMC has 55 gr .223 running about 350/1k at the local purveyor of death, destruction, mayhem and whatnot.

I like cruising through Ammoengine and lucky gunner for prices as well.

I have paid $450 per 1000 rounds for brass cased 62 grain green tip SS109 steel core penetrators recently at gun shows. Brass Cased 223 tracer (64 grain) cost me $110 for 200 rounds.

I don't care for the Wolf or Brown Bear laquered steel case ammo. I have had good luck with Silver Bear - I most recently paid $267 per 1000 rounds.

Mike - this is where I usually get mine (local for me). It's the cheapest I have been able to find for the Lake City, and this store is usually well stocked.

I usually start at ammoman.com. I can sometimes find better prices but not often. Ammunitiontogo.com is another good place to try.

Cheap Russian carp is going for $200/k several places, berdan steel cases.
CTD has BVAC reloads for $175/500 or new Lake City for $520/k
AmmoMan has 2k LC for $880 including shipping.
Scharch has DIY ammo can combos with 1k of 100% preped brass and 55gr FMJ bullets for $219. Just add primer and powder at about another nickel a round and you're good to go after a bit of cranking.

Don't know about any surplus stuff, but a great site to check with is ammoengine.com ; they list calibers, weights, etc. in a chart which shows prices per round, lowest to highest, and has links to the dealers offering those rounds at those prices.

Ammoman.com has 5.56 XM 193 on clips, 900 rounds for $359 delivered.

If you're in the Birmingham area, Marks Outdoors had the same product for $300. They received a bunch a couple of weeks ago. I think they take phone orders as well so you may want to compare shipping and check their availability.

I just want to say a couple of things about the Russian ammo that is very abundant and cheap. I think that it is acceptable for training and practice. I see it for .20 a round pretty steady and the other is ..35 to .50 a round. I like to shoot ... yes the Russian is a bit dirtier ... don't you clean your rifle? I for one want to know that my weapon is capable of shooting all types of ammo, cause the day may come when I can't be picky. If it won't work in your rifle .... get a rifle that can.

The only recommendation I have is that you should have spare parts that come in contact with the steel cases. I can only assume that these parts will wear faster than with brass. We should all have spare parts anyway .....Right?

Armscor makes pretty good, cheap ammo. I haven't used their 5.56, but all of their ammo that I have used has been solid.

Go to ammoseek.com. And enter the caliber, etc and the prices per round are there for easy sorting. Then click o. The supplier. I have had excellent results from ammoman.com on all ammo including the m193 and ss109 223 ammo there

I believe the best website to use is http://gun-deals.com/ You can sort columns to get exactly what you want. Put in your zip code and get shipping prices and see the cost per round. It is a great site. Though not as great as this site.

Get the dies and powder, bullets, primers, and brass and make it. It's the gift that keeps on giving, and you'll learn something useful. And you'll be less in fief to the vagaries of the system. And for any of the regimes goons watching, they really won't know how many rounds you're making, will they?

Forget cheap, go with duty, just because the .mil is restrained by rules doesn't mean we are . . . get TAP or Match from Hornady.

Justin said...

Mike;

I handload 68 grain HPBTs for about the same price as your run of the mill 55 grainers (assuming you re-use the brass at least once).

A bit onerus if one is talking thousands of rounds, but is A LOT cheaper than Hornady TAP or Black Hills equivalent.

I buy American Eagle and use that brass to load the 68 gr HPBTs. Ammo selection is, well, limited in Alaska.

No doubt you have found what you need by now. That's just my $.02.

That's the best deal out there if you don't want Wolf 55 grain (which I've shot thousands of rounds of and never had any trouble). You can get the wolf for .20/round, at aimsurplus.com

A lot of 5.56 is back to being cheap...for now:

It could change a lot in the future.

I'll second, or third, http://surplusammo.com.

Always decent prices, great stock, great service, great people. They do not advertise online unless they stock it (as a general rule).

If you are in western Washington, you must stop in.

Warthog said...

I know the Wolf is cheap but...If you're like me and own a DPMS you should probably re-read your handbook as Wolf is banned by name and shooting ANY steel cased ammo voids your warranty.
