Poor Paulie. His gun prohibitionist ship is sinking fore, aft and amidships and he's still trying to take over the helm.

Paul Helmke with a "dangerous and irresponsible person," 19 April 2010.

Folks,

In the press of the Gunwalker scandal I missed this from four days ago: "Brady Campaign Attends Obama Gun Summit, Not NRA." Old Paulie gives us an insight in his day in the sun at the Obama "gun control summit."

On Tuesday, I attended a meeting at the U.S. Department of Justice with representatives from the White House, the Vice-President’s office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the FBI, and others from the Obama Administration, along with leaders from the gun violence prevention movement, to discuss how to reach the goals outlined in the President’s statement. Officials from the Administration indicated that this was the first of what they hoped would be a series of discussions. They said they had not settled on, or excluded, any relevant proposals.

I began the discussion by listing basic measures that the Brady Campaign, and others, felt could make a difference. The list included: a strong background check system, with good and complete records of dangerous and irresponsible people, applicable to all commercial gun sales; more tools for law enforcement to stop trafficking in illegal guns; increasing the number and type of military-style weapons, including “assault clips,” that should not be readily available to civilians, like machine-guns and fully automatic weapons. Administration officials then asked questions. My colleagues and I gave examples and arguments for legislative, administrative, and voluntary policies that could help reduce the bloodshed.

The meeting lasted more than 90 minutes. Having this many Administration representatives spend this much time on this initial meeting signaled to me that the President is serious. He wants to do something meaningful about gun violence. After meeting with others, including law enforcement and “gun rights” groups, Obama’s representatives will be presenting specific proposals. We hope those will include all the “sound and effective steps” that the President called for in his statement.

He can wish for prancing unicorns to crap chocolate candies too, but that doesn't mean anything of the gun confiscationist program is going to survive the Gunwalker scandal. This political offensive is doomed before it starts. The gun control fortress is collapsing, burning and falling down around his head. Helmke knows it, too. He's just going through the motions, until somebody finally gives him the word that "alles ist kaput!" and he can come out of the ruins with his hands in the air.

A German firearms control scheme collapses in the middle of the 20th Century.

In the words of Mr. Wolf from "Pulp Fiction": "Let's not start sucking each other's ****S just yet".

Until at the very least Constitutionalists inhabit the 5th floor we are just one "event" away from doom.

You exposed this one before they could make it big enough.

From your days as a collectivist you should know they don't have just one of these going on at a time.

I'm not so sure confiscatory gun control measures are out of the question because of this "Fast and Furious" scandal. In fact, I venture to say the opposite is true. There is virtually no coverage of this scandal except here and on a few other informed blog sources. (No, a couple of obscure CBS stories and a mention on FOX, does not alert the people to what is happening.)
Only politicians can force this on the news. Let me give an example. Michelle Bachman was recently asked by David Gregory if she still thought the Obama Administration was a "corrupt gangster government." Her response was something like from what she's seen, yes. The golden softball was lobbed in a high arc and Michelle did not just whiff, she did not swing. Imagine for a minute if she said: "Yes David, the Obama Administration has been arming Mexican drug cartels with weapons they use to kill and terrorize innocent Mexican people and Americans. They did this without telling the Mexican government and are covering it up now. I don't know why you haven't run any exposes on this David, but can you tell me whether an unreported story of gangster style corruption means that corruption does not exist."
This is still a non-story. If you don't believe me, ask a good friend you haven't talked politics with in a few months whether they've heard of it. They have not. No, what we have is stories like that above this post. Lots of them. And Obama denies - but doesn't even have to deny to he U.S. press.
I would like to see this story far and wide because it disgusts me so. This is evil corruption so vile it is almost incomprehensible. It would cripple the democrats in the next election. But what do we have? A couple old guard republicans talking in Iowa. People whose blather is so mind numbing it is almost as bad as trying to listen to an Obama speech.
Maybe I'm impatient. Maybe the republicans are waiting to push this a little closer to elections. I don't know. But if this story does not become a major focus soon, it will simply disappear.

OK, so the quotation reads:

"I began the discussion by listing basic measures that the Brady Campaign, and others, felt could make a difference.

A Freudian slip? Has Helmke actually grown a pair and does he accordingly long to number that FN-FAL among all his toys? I'll certianly go along with *increasing* the number of military-style firearms along with their high capacity, ahem, "clips." The more the merrier.

And if you want information about military-style arms and their proper accoutrements, Mr. Helmke, well, you know which blog to read. Welcome aboard.

I figure Paulie Boy's gonna get pretty much all he's askin' for. The way the Lame Stream Media is ALREADY SPINNING this mess I figure it's just a matter of time. Remember the awesome power of executive orders. Remember also that there is nothing at the moment to stop any agency from assuming authority not present in any legislation.

"survive the Gunwalker scandal"??? Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Willis? Sorry, Mike, but I don't see anything happening to scare the likes of Holder or His Most Holy and Divine Majesty. I hope I'm wrong but I ain't holdin' my breath.

Helmke, like Horwitz, is having trouble with the meaning of NO.

I'm not at all convinced it's truly sinking. The cries for disarmament following the Tucson sickness were very illustrative.

Sure - a lot of it was from "the usual suspects" and magnified by their lap-dogs in the media, but even normally stalwart folk were (and are) falling for the "we've got to do SOMETHING to keep crazy-people from getting guns" nonsense.

In 1986, though I was still quite soundly asleep and didn't even know what had happened, I'm told most were very confident that "FOPA" was a done-deal and cause for celebration. Yet for all the good it did it ended up being one of the most sweeping prohibitions in our history and succeeded in making "class 3" a rich-man's game.

Further, it did more to retard any realistic "2A remedy" than any other law before or since, and - I'm wholly convinced - was responsible for much of the tyranny we've swallowed since!

We quite simply cannot EVER become complacent - if we do, we'll lose more than we can currently imagine.

The Enemy never sleeps -- and hence we cannot afford to relax either!

@ DD, “We quite simply cannot EVER become complacent - if we do, we'll lose more than we can currently imagine. The Enemy never sleeps -- and hence we cannot afford to relax either!”

I totally agree. Back when we were all so happy about the Heller decision I cautioned about premature celebration, and again after McDonald.

Helmke, Holder, Bloomberg and their ilk will merely go into hiding for a while and when they feel the time is ripe will crawl out of their spider holes and shoot us in the back. We are in a combat zone and have been for years. We cannot afford to smoke the big cigar and open the celebratory champagne yet. That said; it will probably be years after we’re dead and gone before our descendants will finally be able to claim victory.

"Good and complete records of dangerous and irresponsible people"?

You mean anybody that is not an incumbent government "public servant" or a LEO?

So, when a sale of a stolen weapon is done from the trunk of a car, this list would be useful and available to the non-FFL (and probable felon) seller? I didn't think so.

In Tampa, even a 14 year old under house arrest is able to conduct illegal weapons sales:
