Of course, somebody could have shot the SOB, if NYC allowed packing.

Stunning success for gun control in NYC, eh?

The only packing NYC permits is of the fudge variety. So there ya go.

Of course, the limeys are blaming it all on Beck and such for talking about "slashing" the budget.

That's a great scene. This scene was supposed to be different. From IMDB:

"The famous scene in which Indy shoots a marauding and flamboyant swordsman was not in the original script. Harrison Ford was supposed to use his whip to get the swords out of his attacker's hands, but the food poisoning he and the rest of the crew had gotten made him too sick to perform the stunt. After several unsuccessful tries, Ford suggested "shooting the sucker." Steven Spielberg immediately took up the idea and the scene was successfully filmed. "

I always thought it was better to take a gun to a knife fight than the other way around. Believed it even BEFORE I saw "Raiders". Way I figure it is; if someone wants to hurt me or mine, I got a right to stop them any way I choose. That's why I practice at the range shooting my sidearm at around 10 yards. It's beyond the kill zone of someone wielding a knife. I know it isn't "sporting" but there isn't anything "sporting" about trying to kill someone.

I may be wrong but that's how I believe. That's why I bought a .308. Even with my old eyes I should be able to drop someone carrying a 5.56 before they can do it to me.

Bad Cyborg X.

News FLASH! Bloomberg forms new group called MAIK - Mayors Against Illegal Knives! Knife shows to be banned in NY, due to the "knife show loophole!" Police to offer a knife "turn-in" where they will give citizens a coupon for a Subway sandwich to everyone turning in a knife. Butter knives to be the exception. Shivs will be "qualified."

Boy Scouts protest, but will give up their Scout knives for safety.

At the Gifford incident, there was only one man (male) packing, and he arrived on the scene after the crowd had subdued Mr. Loughner (sp?). An indication that few citizens take the Second Amendment seriously.

If the victims relatives and friends bring suit against the laws that prevent exercising our rights, maybe the laws will be changed. I am not holding my breath.

The report states - as photos clearly show - it was a 'chef's knife' - so the obvious solution is to require a picture ID from a gov recognized chef's school in order to purchase this deadly assault style knife.
You note that NY has already eliminated gun murders, baseball bat murders, tire-tool murders, hammer murders, sharpened screwdriver murders, and ice-pick murders through their far seeing laws. This is the reason taht it is the safest city in the US, with DC and Chicago running close in second and third.
Perhaps the poor man should have been given counseling, and given an NEA grant so taht he could have expressed his frustration with finger paintings.

If that had been a Tea Party event...........

I laughed when I saw that scene from Indiana Jones, and I'm glad to learn how it came about. Years before, one of the science fiction magazines published a spoof of Edgar Rice Burroughs stories called The Swordsmen of Varnis. It ended the same way. Read it at http://www.fanac.org/fanzines/Slant/Slant3-05.html

Bad Cyborg,
You'd be better off practicing defending unarmed against a knife.

Which is more likely - a man 30 feet away pulling a knife and saying "hey, gimme all yo money, m**********!", or a guy coming within arms reach, and asking "hey man, can I get some change for a bus ride? My car broke down," while his buddy grabs you from behind, or he sucker sticks you in the rib cage or neck with the knife he had hidden in his pocket?

Here is a nice example, from Gabe Suarez and Dog Brothers.:
