The Dan Forrester Memorial Library

Folks,

For almost as long as I can remember, I have been a fan of the science fiction of Jerry Pournelle. His books with Larry Niven were always great and my favorite was Lucifer's Hammer, about what happens when a comet strikes the earth. My favorite character in that book is Dr. Dan Forrester, a meek and mild ex-astrophysicist from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory who saves the day when the Stronghold is attacked by a cannibal army.

Before leaving his indefensible home to journey toward the safety of Senator Jellison's ranch, Forrester goes through his extensive library, culling out books that he believes will be helpful in rebuilding a civilization. He stores them, suitably protected in zip lock bags, in his old septic tank.

Now, I have also been a fan of library sales, yard sales and thrift stores and over the past few years, I have accumulated a collection of books that may one day be useful, never paying more than a couple of bucks for them (more often, less than a dollar) and once, an old widow lady who was moving to a condo gave me some boxes of her husband's books (he had been a civil engineer).

After accumulating a number of these, I decided that they needed to be stored in a weatherproof fashion. Those of you who have read some of my stuff on caching know that I am a big fan (and diligent scrounger) of five gallon icing buckets from grocery store bakeries. Thus, it was natural for me to use these to begin storing my cheap book finds. I have dubbed these the Dan Forrester Memorial Library.

Mind you, this does not include any books that I have need of and refer to in my writing and research. Nor does it include my extensive collection of military field and tech manuals, which I have stored in big steel USGI 20mm ammo cans. If you see some gaps in my collecting, it is probably just because those topics are still on my book shelves in the library in my basement.

A friend of mine who visited the other day noted my DFML buckets and began reading the contents off the labels. He got all excited and said I should let my blog readers know about this cheap method of storing knowledge that might come in handy one day, if, as and when. So, here it is, the current holdings of the Dan Forrester Memorial Library. If this motivates some of y'all to go and do likewise, it certainly can't hurt if you do it on the cheap as I have -- free buckets and mostly fifty cent books.

Literature is always an important part of civilization.

The long term storage of books for future reference really makes sense here. The short story "The Coffin Shaped Rock" features a package of preserved books in the cave, while in Fahrenheit 451, the refugees from the tyrannical government either memorized books in their heads, or smuggled copies of the books with them.

You have a lot of the same books I have and more, especially in the engineering fields, my specialty as a structural draftsman BCAD.

I have kept the library idea from Lucifer's Hammer in mind, too. I like the bucket idea.

I also like that a lot of the books are older, they are more likely to apply to situations where one doesn't have all the modern conveniences. I have a feeling that a my 1940 era civil engineering book will be more applicable than a modern one that relies on designs with computer controlled valves.

I just skimmed the list, but one thing hit me very quickly.

The vast majority of these books are from the seventies and before.

These will be by far the most useful. They were written before people became extensively sue-happy, and will tell you ways to do things, and things to do, that a lawyer would strike down today as an invitation for some idiot who did it wrong to sue you over.

A lot of this information is actually quite old, and a book published in 2008 is going to have, for example, the same trig reference charts as a book published in 1955, or even 1895. This even goes for more complicated things, like welding methods.

The point is, get as old a book as you can that has up to date information. For some of this, this will not work very well, computer books for example--theory has changed little, but application of that theory changes every few years.

Some of us computer savvies should try to get together and set up a digitization method, so we can make profuse digital copies of these books. The more baskets your eggs are in, the better.

Book-eating weevils? As I recall, our protagonist used some rather nasty sprays before entombing his library. Have you used anything?

You might want to toss in the Gingery "build a machine shop from scrap" series.

Gingery Series

It'll allow you to bootstrap a metal shop from practically nothing.

You might also want to scan the books and burn them to DVD in .pdf format. I'd guess that finding a working laptop in the future might be easier than transport for all those buckets.

Book-eating weevils might have been a more likely threat in the septic tank, but not in a sealed, airtight 5-gallon bucket. Throw in a couple mothballs and a few packs of dessicant, and I think you'll be fine, as long as the bucket are stored well (and not, say, floating in a half-filled septic tank).

This is an excellent thread! I have long had stacks of books of all subjects, from construction and water treatment, to metallurgy and first aid, to astronomy and various survival how-to texts. There are a couple places in town that sell used books for 10 cents, a quarter, 50 cents for the hardcover ones, and you can really get a nice selection of informative texts for only a few bucks. Start searching, and packaging them as Mike says (make sure the books are BONE DRY before you pack them or you will be sorry) and you'll have a survivalist library before you know it.

Another thing to add, books, if packed well, are a dying source of good usable information. With the advent of more internet-friendly media, involving data and computer storage, books still sell well, but seem to be taking a "back seat" to online media. In time, depending on a natural or man-made disaster, we may not have the luxury of the information contained on the internet, or it may be suspect (data can be manipulated easily from unknown sources, try that with a book). Knowledge is power, so the more knowledge you have (even in printed form, you can learn it all later) the better a citizen you can be.
