Never clean your rifle until groups open up. More barrels are trashed by cleaning that anything else. Some barrels shoot better with a little copper in them, so leave it there. If your rifle will not group before shooting 10-20 shots it's talking to you so keep your mouth shut an listen as bullet holes do not know how to lie. B-4

Excellent tip on the patch jar and jag. I've been using high temp bearing grease for some time now. I would suspect that's the red stuff he used but much more costly. I small container of grease from an auto parts store will last a very long time and is cheap.
I'm not familiar with shooters choice, but will be.
Thanks for the post!

I've been using bearing grease also for a long time now. Not only does it handle high temperatures but it's waterproof.

So you guys are telling me I should NOT be cleaning my rifle after I get home from the range? I thought the wide patterns initially were just me settling into the rhythm of the task. I had rifle and pistol pretty much beaten into my thick skull by a Gunny at Quantico. I come home and run a fancy barrel snake through it several rimes then I run oily patches through it till they come out clean. (As I was taught) Guess next time I go I won't clean the barrel after I get home.

What about my pistols? I usually run 100 - 200 rounds of WinClean through them at a setting. Should I leave off cleaning the Glock and the Jericho? Matt? What do you say?

BTW, they were arguing this topic over at Herschel's place a coupla days ago.

On rifles - what B4 said.

Semi-auto pistols - depends. There is no telling how many rounds you can put through a Glock, unless you are shooting black powder.

Hi Mike and Matt....
'Don't know this "Shooters' Choice" stuff, never heard of it either. "HOPPE'S #9" is what I have used since I bought my first can at the Land of Sports here in Hammond back in the late 50's!!! "Coolie' ideas about soaking yer patches and pouring the stuff over yer brushes....

I do kinda feel like he's overdoing it a bit...and I didn't watch even half of it.

Still, one thing I've become far more cognizant of over the years is that having a bond with your firearm, or any other kind of equipment, is not really a matter of set procedures but of developing a sensitivity to the particulars of your own unique situation. So I don't worry to much about what other people are doing 'wrong' if it works.

When it's not working and they keep doing it, that's when I get antsy.
