Meet Maurice Schwenkler, "progressive" window warrior. If this gutsy but stupid little puke hadn't accidentally got hinself caught, we would this morning be celebrating the onset of The Window War.
My thanks to Wretched Dog for tipping me off to this:
There are many stories about this all over the blogosphere this morning (The Denver Post's is linked above). But I like Jared Jacang Maher's at Westword.com.
The windows of the Colorado Democratic Party headquarters at 777 North Santa Fe Drive were smashed around 2:20 am this morning. As we reported earlier, 24-year-old Maurice Schewenkler was arrested for the crime. Apparently, an officer just happened to be driving by when he spotted two males whacking away at the windows with hammers. The suspects tried to flee on their bikes, but the cop nabbed Schwenkler, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt over his head and a shirt covering his face while making smashy-smashy with his buddy.
Apparently the eleven broken windows had posters promoting Obama's heathcare reform. Democratic State Party Chair Pat Waak also noted that an anti-Obamacare poster was glued to an outside wall, presumably at the time the window vandalism took place. The obvious diagnosis is that this is a clear case of conservative town-hall fury run amok. Only, in his mug shot, Schewenkler looks more Sonic Youth than Reagan-youth. Plus, it turns out that someone bearing his exact name -- a fairly rare one, to say the least -- was once an employee of a progressive political action committee based in Colorado.
According to campaign finance records, someone named "Maurice Schewenkler" was paid $500 on November 6, 2008, by a group called the Colorado Citizens' Coalition.
Judging by the contributors, this 527 political organization falls on the liberal side of the spectrum. How liberal? Contributors include Tim Gill ($12,500), the AFL-CIO ($25,000), NARAL ($12,500) and Pat Stryker ($75,000). The documents list Schewenkler's duty as "electioneering" and his purpose as "communication."
In addition, his address is listed as a house at 10th and Lipan streets, which is just blocks away from the state Democratic headquarters.
The house at 1065 Lipan is the former location of the Derailer Bicycle Collective, a radical, free bike fix-it shop profiled by Westword back in 2006. In December of that year, Derailer moved to its current location at 411 Lipan. City tax records report that the owner of the house is a woman who also happens to be a well-known progressive activist/artist in Denver. How progressive? She's been an organizer for anti-nuclear weapons groups and was once the U.S coordinator for the group Potters for Peace; one of her most attention-getting art works was 34,000 miniature clay bombs and submarines fashioned to represent the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
The artist in question hasn't returned Westword's call as of yet, so we'll just leave her name out of it at the present time. (Also, her answering machine listed four womens' names, but no Maurice.)
But it seems pretty clear that, for this story, we all ought to hold off on the right-wing-anger-to-heath-reform vandalism narrative for now.
Denver Post photo of masturbatory carnage: "A volunteer cleans up glass at the Colorado Democratic Party Headquarters after someone smashed nearly all the windows of the office early Tuesday morning, on August 25, 2009."
Indeed, Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit posts this news with the headlined question: A FALSE-FLAG OPERATION IN DENVER?
Gateway Pundit here passes on a left-wing blogger's allegation that the 527 is an SEIU front.
Moe Lane over at Red State is in a lather about this story.
Pro-Obamacare fanatic attacks CO Democratic party HQ!

That is me being charitable. Because the alternative is that Maurice Schwenkler is an idiot whose idiocy is only matched by the Democratic idiots who sent him out to bust his own side’s window:
A 24-year-old arrested this morning on suspicion of smashing 11 windows at Colorado Democratic Party headquarters tried to conceal his identity while allegedly committing the crime, according to police descriptions.
While [Maurice] Schwenkler does not appear in the state’s voter registration database, a person by that name in November 2008 received $500 from a political 527 committee called Colorado Citizens Coalition for “communications,” according to campaign finance disclosures.
A Maurice Schwenkler also signed an online 2005 petition to free anti-war Christian protesters who were captured in Iraq.
More details here, here, and most assuredly here (the phrase “connected to ultra-liberal groups once investigated by the FBI for potential domestic terrorism incidents” features prominently) [and now here and here]: this Rootswire screenshot of the Colorado Citizens Coalition will also prove amusing. Which leads to the next question: what does State Democratic Party Chairwoman Pat Waak know about this? She familiar with Schwenkler at all? Or the guy that’s still at large?
At any rate, I think that it’s time that extremist fringe supporters of health care rationing stop using violence to accomplish their goals. It’s not going to derail the democratic process, and it’s bad for the country in general.
Now, I will concede that Schwenkler has done us a favor by getting caught. The GOP, which is always eager to copy their opponent's behavior and tactics, will now presumably go out and break their own windows too, although being stupid they will likely get caught as well. Anybody remember Donald Segretti?
Richard Nixon's "rat-f-cker."
Look, I don't object to window breaking in a good cause. I encourage it. I'm not even surprised about provocations such as Schwenkler's.
(Poor schmuck. Now whenever anybody does something designed to make the other side look like they did it -- and gets caught -- they will be said to have "pulled a Schwenkler." The stupid SOB's name will live on in history with the same connotation as exposing your private parts in public. I can only guess what a schwenkler is in Yiddish. I know what it sounds like.)
Anyway, back to provocations -- certainly they should be expected. Anybody whose PR is smarting for sending thugs out to beat up people at town meetings is going to want to make the other side look bad. Of course the GOP lacks both the nads and the natural action arm that the unions like SEIU provide for the Dems to actually do something like break windows. And I suppose we shouldn't blame them, and I'll tell you why.
Breaking windows was and is the job of the Sons of Liberty, which is say, it is our job. And now, a young SEIU sponsored "progressive" has gone and done what Three Percenters should have been doing for years to both parties. I don't know whether to hang my head in shame or cheer, "Go get 'em, Maurice!"
