NEVER HAPPEN HEADER

On the Never Again Series

The six novels in this series are a what-if, alternative history. Two lovers are sent back in time to 1906 with modern weapons and 38 billion 1906 dollars. Their mission is to prevent the rise of fascism and communism, avert the major 20th Century wars, including World Wars I and II, and forestall such democides as those by Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot.

A description and the cover of each book are given below, along with a link to the free pdf download.

Foremost, this series is character driven entertainment, filled with strong action, humor, pathos, high emotion, sex, conflict, and maybe even tears. There are a large number of docudramas in the books that provide a true background or context for the action and conflicts, such as Pol Pot's killing fields, the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the Holocaust, Stalin's starvation of the Ukraine, Turkey's genocide of the Armenians, Rwanda's genocide of the Tutsi, the Russian abortive 1905 communist uprising, the Battle of the Somme in World War I, the Vietnam War and defeat of the South and resulting communist transformation of the country, and finally the Boat People.

But, above all, these books are a story about love versus power -- the love of dedicated warriors for each other and for humanity and who risk their lives and each other in their deadly struggle against power, unaware that:

Unseen, loves dark foe
Power, like a deadly plague,
Infests, subverts, kills.

Of course, throughout the novels there is my message, that of this website and my blogs, which is about the sheer magnitude of democide, and the democratic peace that underlies Presdient Bush's foreign policy as the solution to democide and war. But, with the help of my editor, I worked to keep the message consistent with the action and characterizations so that all would flow as a natural part of the plots. The novels are meant to be absorbing and fun, which is hardly consistent with pedagogical lectures on democracy.

Therefore, I also wrote a nonfiction supplement, Never Again, the cover and synopsis of which I included below after the novels. I wrote it to answer all those questions that the novels might raise about democide and democracy, as well as provide a full and coherent argument for the democratic peace impossible in the novels. It is related to the novels only in that it deals with democracy, freedom, democide, and the democratic peace. It could as well be called a supplement to this website, my blogs, or American foreign policy

Finally, there is a poem that expresses the love between my characters and their fight for freedom. Truth to tell, I fell in love with my characters and since I no longer write about them, I miss them all. This poem never fails to bring tears to my eyes. For me, it is their memorial and that of all those who have fought and died for democratic freedom. I have based it on Iris Hasselden's "I am There."

Look for us where freedom rides high
And the doves of peace are wheeling overhead
When the breaths of love sweep the cloudy sky
And one by one, the weapons are shed
Look for us when armories are bare
And the stars are clear in the cloudless sky
When no tank disturbs the morning mist that hangs on the air
And the days of peace and freedom pass by.

We are there, where the love of freedom flows
And where lovers kiss under a silver moon
Where the insects hum and the tall grass grows
And sunlight warms the peaceful afternoon
We are there in the busy street
We take your hand in the city square
In the market place where free people meet
In your quiet room - we are there

We are the love of humanity and each other you cannot see
And all we ask is -- look for all of us.
We are the love that always will be

If you have trouble finding these books,

IMPORTANT NOTE: Among all the democide estimates appearing in these books, some have been revised upward. I have changed that for Mao's famine, 1958-1962, from zero to 38,000,000. And thus I have had to change the overall democide for the PRC (1928-1987) from 38,702,000 to 76,702,000. Details here.

I have changed my estimate for colonial democide from 870,000 to an additional 50,000,000. Details here.

Thus, the new world total: old total 1900-1999 = 174,000,000. New World total = 174,000,000 + 38,000,000 (new for China) + 50,000,000 (new for Colonies) = 262,000,000.

Just to give perspective on this incredible murder by government, if all these bodies were laid head to toe, with the average height being 5', then they would circle the earth ten times. Also, this democide murdered 6 times more people than died in combat in all the foreign and internal wars of the century. Finally, given popular estimates of the dead in a major nuclear war, this total democide is as though such a war did occur, but with its dead spread over a century.

Book 1 COVER

Book 1, War and Democide Never Again--three chapters. "There will only be you and me, John. I will be your . . . partner in all this." After that hint of intimacy, it does not take much more for the gorgeous, but headstrong warrior, Joy Phim and other members of a powerful secret Survivor's Benevolent Society to convince historian John Banks to travel back in time with her to change history.

The Society, comprising victims of war and democide, has discovered that democracies do not wage war on one another and commit the least violence. They charge John and Joy with this mission: travel back to 1906 San Francisco and from then on promote global democracy and eliminate the causes and progenitors of the 20th century genocides and major wars that killed over 200,000,000 people--to make the often repeated, post-Holocaust cry, Never Again, true. To accomplish this end, the time travelers are prepared to use any means -- bribery, lies, deception, frame-ups, and political intervention, but John promises himself, not assassination. Except for one person, that is.

Will these mismatched lovers succeed in creating an alternative peaceful universe, or will their incredible wealth and weapons, and their personal conflicts jeopardize their mission? Or even destroy them?

Book2 COVER

Book 2, Nuclear Holocaust Never Again--three chapters. What if there were a solution to war and genocide? What if a secret society sent back to 1906 two lovers, Joy Phim, a gorgeous warrior, and John Banks, a pacifist professor of history, and gave them the incredible wealth and weapons necessary to create a peaceful alternative universe--one that never experienced the horrors of world war, the Holocaust, and the other atrocities of the twentieth century? And what if, at great personal cost, they succeed too well and create a peaceful world of complacent democracies?

In Book 2, the clock is turned back to their arrival in 1906. They receive a message from the future of the universe they will create-Islamic fundamentalists have attacked the unarmed democracies with nuclear weapons and enslaved them. It is now up to these lovers to prevent this horrible future.

But the fundamentalists know about the message, but not who received it. They send a female assassin back to 1906 to find and kill the time travelers and thus save their future victory. The assassin soon discovers who the time travelers are, which leads to the most dangerous combat, and for Joy and the assassin, the shocking discovery of their identities.

Book3 COVER

Book 3, Reset Never Again--three chapters. In Book 1 of this of this series, a secret society of war and democide survivors sent a female warrior Joy Phim and her historian lover John Banks back to 1906 to prevent the major wars and democides of the 20th Century and to promote a democratic peace.

In Book 2, the new universe created by the lovers enabled a radical Islamic ruler to achieve a global Muslim dictatorship by attacking and defeating the democracies with nuclear weapons. Dying survivors sent a message about the nuclear attack back in time for the lovers to find, and to prevent this horrible future. This was their new mission, and the lives of billions of people hung on their success.

In this Book 3, the new peaceful democratic world the lovers created in response to the message they received about a nuclear war becomes known in the far future as their achievement, and this sets a dangerous example of what time travelers can do. Electrified by this possibility, a Muslim religious dictatorship illegally constructs a time machine and sends back to 1906 a mismatched pair of warrior assassins. Their mission is to kill the lovers and to fight a global jihad for Islam. Unprepared for the deadly attacks of these assassins, the lovers are in the fight of their life to survive and carry out their democratic peace mission. Then they unknowingly accept as a partner in their mission a Chinese Muslim warrior also sent back to 1906 to kill them.

Book4 COVER

Book 4, Red Terror Never Again--the narrative hook. A secret society of war and democide survivors sends a female warrior Joy Phim and her historian lover John Banks back to 1906 to prevent the major wars and democides of the 20th Century and to promote a democratic peace. Their intervention becomes known in the far future, and a Muslim dictator sends a Chinese warrior woman back to 1906 to kill them and save the world for Islam. The lovers and the assassin soon discover that Bolsheviks have already changed the universe with a successful Russian Revolution in 1905.

Changed? What could change their past? How could the Russian Revolution occur in 1905 and not 1917 as it did in the universe they left? When the lovers realize the incredible answer, they must confront it as they try to stop the Red Terror, Bread War, and Russian Civil War killing millions. They are faced with unimaginably deadly weapons and power. With the future of the universe at stake, with John and Joy's only choice being between a future democratic peace and a global communist dictatorship, they launch a dangerous plan. Its nightmarish result realizes their worst fear. But not for the assassin that had been sent to kill them.

Book5 COVER

Book 5, Genocide Never Again -- one chapter. A strange and beautiful woman murdering high German officers; a warp in the chronology of time that changes the face and nature of certain wars; the breaking out of a genocide years earlier than expected and on its way to the murder of millions, the near sinking of an historic passenger liner; the murder of time traveler John Banks' gorgeous partner Joy Phim by a rogue time policeman; and his falling in love with the assassin that is Joy from another universe sent to kill them both, but which ended up in a mŽnage a trois. All these events come together in a shocking and horrible way that endangers John's mission to end wars and promote a democratic peace.

All finally hinges on an assassination and a terrible and deadly battle whose outcome portends a horrible future of dictatorships, continues wars, unspeakable democides, and a Niagara of blood. The time police of the far future are aware of this catastrophic danger, but their rules do not allow intervention to change the past, and no one will . . . except possibly for one time policewomen. Will she intervene? All depends on her willingness to sacrifice everything, including herself.

Book6 COVER

Book 6, Never Again?--Conclusion of this series. The time traveling John Banks' Remembrance, Book 1 in this series, and his chronology of 20th Century events, all from the new universe he and Joy Phim created beginning in 1906, fall into the hands of the boy Cyril Clement in our universe. Temporarily. Soon, he loses them, but remembers their chief concepts, the democratic peace and democide, and makes them the basis of his professional career.

Even more astounding, once his career is established, Cyril meets with Banks and encourages him to make these ideas the center of his Yale dissertation.

Meanwhile, a Vietnamese family escapes from North Vietnam to the South to be faced with the awful meaning of war and with defeat, family catastrophe and death. One survives and flees on the ocean with her grandchildren, only to meet an inescapable horror, while leaving a child, Joy Phim, with whom John Banks traveled in time -- but will she again?

While Banks is teaching about the Vietnam War and its aftermath, he is bedeviled by a series of nightmarish dreams about his and Joy's time travel and their adventures and deaths. Are these premonitions about their forthcoming time travel? Or something even more critical to this series?

SUPPLEMENT COVER

Never Again: Ending War, Democide, & Famine Through Democratic Freedom A factual supplement to the Never Again Series, this website, and my blogs. The book also provides an essential understanding of the theoretical and historical basis of President George Bush's democratic peace foreign policy -- his Forward Strategy of Freedom. It argues philosophically, and from international law, that individual freedom is the most basic human right. This, and that freedom is a natural desire of all people, would be enough to justify freedom for everyone. But, the major substance of Never Again goes far beyond these justifications to establish that freedom is also a Moral Good.

One Moral Good is that liberal democracies, those whose people are individually free with secure civil and political rights and liberties, don't make war on each other, as President Bush has stated correctly in support of his foreign policy. Another is that their democratic governments do not murder them. And a third is that their internal political violence is minimal compared to non-democracies.

All this alone would make freedom the foremost Moral Good. But this book also shows that free people -- democracies -- never have famines, and that freedom is an engine of the greatest wealth and development among nations.

In short, to the Moral Imperative, "No people should ever suffer war, democide, famine, and mass impoverishment, no, never again," this book proves that fostering individual freedom is the practical way to assure this.
