06/19/2007 Archived Entry: "vanity plate fun"
I'm considering getting a vanity plate.
It's me, PSM. Hi.
I'm not really considering getting a vanity plate. But I was entertaining the notion enough to actually go on New Hampshire's motor vehicle website and plug in some vanity plate ideas. I was surprised at how many of my ideas were already taken, in a state with a scant million people, most of whom don't have vanity plates.
By law, the plate can only be seven characters and must include at least two letters. And it can't be obscene, or "be ethnically, racially or which a reasonable person would find offensive to good taste." (The state of New Hampshire's grammar, not mine, I swear) So while BADCOP might be available according to the database, good luck getting through the application process with it. No, the sentiment has to be a tiny bit more subtle. But that's part of the fun, now, isn't it.
First of all, somebody is already driving around advertising TCF. I know. I was shocked, too.
LIVFREE, FREEDOM, IMFREE, LIBERTY, all taken. Darn these granite staters. Also unavailable are 45ACP, 9MM, MAUSER and FULAUTO. 40 S&W, 308 WIN, 50 BMG, HIPOWER and M1A are all still untaken, however.
I had much better results with "message" plates; although somebody in NH is already driving a vehicle with a plate that says WEED, nobody has yet applied for WEEEEED. There is at least one other person in NH who thinks that W. is a shnook and was willing to spend the $30 or whatever to share NOBUSH with the world. But FSP, surprisingly, as well as FIJA, ANARCH, ANARCHST, SOVERGN and 1STAMDT, are all unclaimed.
And I might as well save you the trouble -- yes, PSM is already taken. No, not by me. HAILPSM is still available.
Anyway, eventually you have to decide on one thing. Some late eliminations on my list included 4NJOYN, ARRRR (ARRR wasn't available -- neither was AR, although I doubt for the same reason), and GOLDSTD. But for now, the winner, the plate I would get if I were going to get a vanity plate, and will get if it's still available when and if I ever do decide to get one: V4VNGNC.
p.s. Yes, I realize the inherent flaw in paying a fee to the government in order to use one's license plate as a forum to express an anti government idea. But I'm not a purist. And I thought it was fun.
