12/13/2005 Archived Entry: "See Radley Balko on Cory Maye"

JUST WANT TO RECOMMEND that anybody interested in the fate (and now the ongoing appeals) of Cory Maye get their news from Radley Balko. Balko is the only blogger who, to the best of my knowledge, is getting first-hand information -- including documents -- from both the prosecution and the defense on this outrage. He's doing a heck of a job tracking down statements and records.

Also a clarification:

First accounts made it sound as if police soldiers kicked in Maye's door by mistake, not realizing that the building was a duplex with two different tenants. The only person named in a warrant was the tenant on the other side.

Balko got copies of the search warrant(s) and discovered that there was indeed a warrant for the side of the duplex where Maye lived. However, the investigation prior to the mid-night door kicking was so sloppy that police the troops didn't even bother to get the name of the person (Maye) who lived there. The only officer who claimed to have done any surveillance on the building or to have talked with the original -- and now forever unknown -- informant is the officer killed in the raid. And he died leaving not a single note, document, or statement to back his claims.

It just boggles the mind that in city after city, year after year, cop armies are allowed to use such drastic tactics on such flimsy-to-nonexistent justifications. What the hell are judges doing, approving this warfare against Americans?
