GeoBulb (TM)

C. Crane is selling an 800 lumen LED light bulb, that uses 8 watts of power and lasts for 30,000 hours. $120. Out of stock until mid-May. 800 lumens is equivalent to a 55 watt light bulb. That's 100 lumens per watt, and 250 hours per dollar. Still quite a bit more expensive than compact fluorescents, which get 1600 lumens (95 watt incandescent) from 23 watts (70 lumens per watt) and glow for 12,000 hours for $4.75 (2526 hours per dollar). I predict that the end of the compact fluorescent is nigh. Long live the LED!

Unfortunately the GeoBulb will not be available until 6/30/2008 according to the C. Crane website.

The bulb above is the GeoBulb II. At ccrane.com, that bulb's price is now down to $49.95. With its 30,000 hour life, it's now same price as CFL (but uses less electricty than CFL and has no mercury). GeoBulb III will soon be available. It's 30% brighter (355-570 lumens), lasts 66% longer (50,000 hours), uses 6% less electricty (7 watts). However, as it's now the cutting-edge, it's still pricy ($86-$100).

Thank you, Brian! I ordered one. Should have it in a week or a little more (UPS ground from CA to NY). Will give a report after I've tried it out.

I ordered the 60 watt equivalent Geobulb II. They say they'll have the Geobulb III in stock on 10/21/2009.
