# GeekWithA.45 at Walking the Walls - The Senate Has Adjourned until Monday afternoon. The "assault weapons" ban is dead as soon as the clock counts down. I posted the following comment:

Yes! Next target: the Brady Bill. Then the 1968 Gun Control Act (GCA), and finally the National Firearms Act (NFA). Of course somewhere in there we need a Constitutional Amendment that clarifies that the Second Amendment means nationwide Vermont carry, including especially airplanes (unless forbidden by the owner), government schools, and court rooms.

# I picked up my new CVA Optima break-action muzzleloader in .45 caliber yesterday afternoon. Fired 9 rounds through it. They made a two-inch group at 25 yards, about as well as I usually do with open sights on any rifle. No kick at all and not much noise with 50 grains of powder. Still not much kick, but louder, with 100 grains. Here's a picture of the rifle from the CVA web site:

And below is one I took of the rifle and the stuff I got to load and clean it. The yellow tube is Bore Butter. It lubricates and seasons the bore, like vegetable oil on a cast iron pan, and smells really good. The black T is the breach plug wrench, which came with the gun. The little brass cylinder next to the primers is a cleaning jag that screws onto the back end of the ramrod for pushing patches down the barrel. The primers are standard 209 shotgun primers. Below those is a box of 50 Hodgdon Triple Seven pellets. I plan to use loose Triple Seven most of the time, but Eddie was out of it, and it is mighty tempting to spend a little more for pellets, since they're so easy to handle. Below the powder is a package of sabots and .40 caliber bullets. I got some 10mm lead bullets as well, for cheaper shooting, but Eddie didn't have just sabots yesterday (should be coming with the powder on Tuesday). And then there's a bag of patches. I forgot to include in the picture the Gorilla Grease, which lubricates the threads on the breach plug. I still need to get a bullet starting ball; it's hard to start it with the rifle's ramrod. And some solvent for the tiny hole in the bore end of the breach plug.

I ran a dry patch down the bore to get rid of most of the shipping grease, then fired three primers through it, as advised by the instruction manual, to make sure any grease remnants were burned away. Shooting is simple. Drop a Triple Seven pellet (or two) down the bore, put a bullet in a sabot and push it down the bore, open the action, put a primer in the back of the breach plug, close the action, cock the hammer, aim, pull the trigger. I managed to fire six rounds before cleaning. The sixth round was hard to push in. Cleaning up Triple Seven is quite easy. A few patches wetted with water down the bore, then a few dry patches. No dirty mess on hands or gun. I ended my shooting session with bore butter on a patch, inside and out. It was actually more pleasant than cleaning up after a smokeless powder shooting session. No bad odors.

CVA recommends not shooting round balls in this rifle. The rifling twist is too fast for them, which makes them inaccurate. I think I'll be happy with saboted lead bullets, assuming they don't foul the bore.

# Commander Martin - Don't Close the Blinds - a parable attempting to explain to a child why the United States is making war on Iraq. Very well told, but nation states are not households, and instead of just killing the bad neighbor, we have killed innocent members of his family. [madogre]

BTW, it's 9/11/2004, the third anniversary of the World Trade Center demolition. Yawn.
