The Jamaican results were largely confirmed by another Caribbean study, the 1980 Cannabis in Costa RicaA Study in Chronic Marijuana Use edited by William Carter for the Institute for Study of Human Issues. (ISHI, 3401 Scientific Center, Philadelphia.)

This study makes clear that socially approved ganja use will largely replace the use of alcohol (rum) if available.
