These three Amphibious Transport Dock ships were commissioned by Italy between 1987 and 1994. Each of the three can transport up to a battalion of troops, with 30 medium tanks, or 36 tracked armoured vehicles.

The floodable well dock can accommodate three LCM landing craft, each capable of transporting 30 tons of material. Two davits on a large sponson on L9892 hold two LCVP craft and a patrol boat. Three davits on the main deck of L9893 and L9894 provide for the deployment of three LCVP landing craft and a patrol boat.

The main flight deck was built to run the full length of the vessel on the first two ships; L9892 and L9893, but the third vessel, L9894, was built with a wider, shorter landing deck to accomodate the addition of a 76mm dual purpose gun. The second vessel, L9893, was later refitted to add the wider deck and the 76mm gun as well. Each vessel has three helicopter landing areas. This allows the vessels to accommodate three Sea King SH-3D helicopters or five Agusta Bell AB-212 helicopters, or a mixture of the two.

The ships provide Italy with a roll-on/roll-off landing capability for land embarkation; air lift through the use off high capacity helicopters; and transportation by sea to shore, using the ship's own systems and landing craft for transportation and assault to shore.
