Norway thus became the fourth country to employ the US AEGIS system after the United States, Japan, and Spain. The result of the agreements between Norway, Spain, and the United states is the Nansen Class of frigates which have been built along the same basic lines as the Spanish Bazan class. The first vessel, F 310, Fridtjof Nansen , was launched in June 2004 and commissioned in April of 2006. A second vessel, F 311, Roald Amundsen, was launched in May 2006, and the third, F 312, Otto Sverdrup was launched in May 2006. Two more are under construction . While employing the AEGIS AN/SPY-1F system from the US firm Lockheed for air defense and overall battle management, the Norwegians turned to Thales for their anti-submarine suite using the CAPTAS Mk 2 V1 Combined Active / Passive Towed Array Sonar and the Spherion MRS 2000 hull-mounted sonar for short, mid, and long range detection of submarines. The helicopter embarked is the NH-90 using Thales dipping sonar and anti-submarine torpedoes. Outside of that, the vessel is well armed with two triple mounts of Mk-46 torpedoes, an eight cell VLS on the forward deck carrying 32 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles, and a 76mm rapid fire, dual purpose main gun.. |
