Dear Dr. Koonin,

 

I saw your editorial, “Getting Serious about Biofuels”, in Science, Vol.311, 27 Jan. 2006, and was impressed by its lucent exposition of the need for biofuels.

 

There is a better almost fuel-free way to solve the energy crisis, just in case you are personally interested and in case British Petroleum might be interested. The solution would also simultaneously begin to clean up the polluted biosphere, and – by use of negative EM energy (the so-called “dark energy” the astrophysicists are so avidly seeking and that Dirac abhorred) – one can also reverse global heating due to most human energy technology processes.

 

The secret for solving the energy crisis is that all EM field energy and potential energy in the universe already occurs in freely flowing streams of observable EM energy (observable photons) from the associated source charges producing the fields and potentials. Simply assemble some charge or a dipole, and one’s instruments can readily measure that steady and free outpouring of observable photons from then on, till the end of time if nothing bothers it. Leave the charge or dipole alone, and do not allow anything to disperse or destroy it, and it will continue to pour out real usable EM energy till the end of the universe. Every charge and dipole in the original matter in the universe has been doing this since the beginning of the universe, some 13 billion years ago, and have not “run down” yet.

 

But no instrument known to man can detect any observable energy input to the source charge. Consequently this “unsolved” source charge problem caused great consternation; typical remarks are:

 

"The connection between the field and its source has always been and still is the most difficult problem in classical and quantum electrodynamics." [D. K. Sen, Fields and/or Particles, Academic Press, London and New York, 1968, p. viii].

 

"A generally acceptable, rigorous definition of radiation has not as yet been formulated."

…. "The recurring question has been: Why is it that an electric charge radiates but does not absorb light waves despite the fact that the Maxwell equations are invariant under time reversal?" [B. P. Kosyakov, “Radiation in electrodynamics and in Yang-Mills theory,” Soviet Phys. Usp., 35(2), Feb. 1992, p. 135, 141].

 

“…it is not usually acknowledged that electrodynamics, both classical and quantal, are in a sad state." [Mario Bunge, Foundations of Physics, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1967, p. 176].

 

Either the source charge problem (1) falsifies the entire conservation of energy law, and thus almost all of physics and thermodynamics, or else (2) it shows that every source charge continually absorbs virtual photons (unobservable!) from the seething virtual state vacuum fluctuations, and coherently integrates them into observable photons, re-emitting the absorbed virtual energy in ordered observable form. That of course totally falsifies the old second law of thermodynamics. Not to worry, many things are known to violate it continually, and in fact if you start with a system in equilibrium, any potentialization of that system is a negative entropy operation as far as the system is concerned.  The system does not care where you get the energy – either freely from the environment or pay for it yourself. The input of usable potential energy (potentialization) moves the system out of equilibrium (state of maximum entropy) and to a state of lower entropy, and thus mere potentialization (without current flow) is actually an easily achieved negative entropy operation.

 

The old second law has thus always been an oxymoron, implicitly assuming its own contradiction has first occurred to move the system away from equilibrium, so that subsequently the system can produce additional entropy. [Proof that real physical systems are in theory capable of producing continuous negative entropy is given by D. J. Evans and Lamberto Rondoni, "Comments on the Entropy of Nonequilibrium Steady States," J. Stat. Phys., 109(3-4), Nov. 2002, p. 895-920]. Having solved the source charge problem in 1999 and published it obscurely in 2000, I nominated the source charge and any dipole as the first known examples of real systems producing continuous negative entropy since they must exhibit broken symmetry of opposite charges. The co-called “isolated” charge polarizes its surrounding vacuum, so also constitutes a dipolar SYSTEM.

 

The key to the solution to the source charge problem is very simple but difficult to see because of its familiarity and simplicity! When we visualize (i.e., model) the seething virtual state vacuum as a virtual particle flux or soup, we actually visualize (and model) that vast disordered vacuum entity as nevertheless having continual finite appearances of total order (each individual virtual particle is completely ordered while it exists!). So it is analogous to Maxwell’s statement about the old second law: He stated:

 

"The truth of the second law is … a statistical, not a mathematical, truth, for it depends on the fact that the bodies we deal with consist of millions of molecules… Hence the second law of thermodynamics is continually being violated, and that to a considerable extent, in any sufficiently small group of molecules belonging to a real body." [Maxwell, J. C., Tait's Thermodynamics II, Nature 17, 278–280 (7 February 1878)].

 

Today of course there are several precise “transient fluctuation” theorems allowing calculation of these “negative entropy” excursions of the parts of a large system. A particularly good one is given by D. J. Evans and D. J. Searles, "Equilibrium microstates which generate second law violating steady states," Phys. Rev. E, Vol. 50, 1994, p. 1645-1648. It was further extended by Gavin E. Crooks, "Entropy production fluctuation theorem and the nonequilibrium work relation for free energy differences," Phys. Rev. E, Vol. 60, 1999, p. 2721-2726.

 

Indeed, experimentally it has been shown that such a negative entropy excursion – when all the reactions suddenly “run backwards” – can last for up to two seconds in an appropriate solution, and involve a region of a cubic micron in volume (some 30 billion ions, whose reactions temporarily “run backwards”). Now consider again that source charge, which is continually absorbing virtual photons from the vacuum. Each virtual photon is a totally ordered “thing” when it is absorbed! It has no internal disorder at all, even though the entire ensemble of such particles is “disordered” and statistical. The individually absorbed virtual photon is totally ordered. Hence an iterative series of such virtual photon absorptions – each transformed into a corresponding virtual change in the mass-energy of the charged particle – constitutes a coherent summation or integration of those virtual photon energies in the form of unitary mass energy virtual changes, until the next quantum level of excitation (potentialization) is reached. At that moment, the excitation abruptly decays by emission of an observable photon.  Hence the charge sits there and continually emits observable photons without any OBSERVABLE energy input. Nevertheless, the first law of thermodynamics (energy conservation) is obeyed.  Problem solved!

 

But to return to the classical EM and EE model. Eminent scientists (such as Feynman, Wheeler, Margenau, Bunge and many others) have pointed out major – and shocking – falsities in the sorry old 1880s CEM/EE model. Indeed, the model is so foul -- and it has been fouled for more than a century --  that its continuing propagation in all our universities, and by the NAS, NSF, etc. calls into question whether or not our organized scientific community has any scientific ethics left at all! This is particularly true since leading scientists such as Feynman and Wheeler have pointed out most of those falsities.

 

To see a listing of those known falsities still perpetrated on all our electrical engineers, see my paper “Errors and Omissions in the CEM/EE Model”, available for downloading freely at link.  That model, e.g., still assumes the material ether (falsified in 1887), force fields in space (totally false; force and force fields only exist in material systems since mass is a component of force itself), etc. It also still arbitrarily discards all of nature’s asymmetrical Maxwellian systems. It assumes a flat spacetime (falsified by Einstein in 1916), and an inert vacuum (long falsified since at least the 1930s by particle physics), etc.

 

The CEM/EE paper also contains information sufficient for any technical university or scientific branch of a large company to build a magnetic Wankel engine, easily outputting more work than the amount of energy the operator alone pays to input (the excess input energy is freely input by the seething vacuum). Thus when running in this mode, the ASYMMETRIC system is analogous in its operation to the operation of a home heat pump, whose efficiency is only about 50%, but with its extra energy input from the environment, it can still output 3 to 4 times as much energy as the OPERATOR ALONE inputs. Hence the COP = 3.0 to 4.0.

 

The magnetic Wankel system is also easily “closed looped” so that, once running stably and powering its load, it can be switched into “self-powering” mode as a permissible nonequilibrium steady state thermodynamic system freely taking all its required energy input from the virtual state vacuum, similar to the operation of a solar cell array power system taking all its required energy input from the observable solar radiation in its external environment).

 

If you wish, simply have BP physicists and engineers build a magnetic Wankel, which is an adaptation of a rail gun (linear magnetic motor) whose configuration confines its back mmf to a small part of the rotation circle. Then as the stator enters and passes through that back mmf region, the device simply kills its own back mmf, resulting in an ASYMMETRICAL engine that has no back mmf. The sharp gradient process used to kill the back mmf almost for free, is already known by leading nonequilibrium thermodynamicists (See Kondepudi and Prigogine, Modern Thermodynamics, 1999 printing, p. 459) to allow violation of the sorry old second law of thermodynamics.

 

So please have BP build it and test it to your heart’s content. That engine (and several other Japanese COP>1.0 EFTV systems) has been ruthlessly suppressed by the Japanese Yakuza. In 1996 the Yakuza suppressed the Kawai self-powering engine, e.g., right here in Huntsville, Alabama in the direct presence of my board of directors and I. Else our little company CTEC would have placed a self-powering Kawai engine on the world market in mid-1997.

 

I hope you are indeed interested in solving the energy crisis permanently, cheaply, and cleanly, I attach a letter I wrote to some important DoE scientists on this very problem, but to little avail – DoE is solidly entrenched, and now heading for the building of lots of new nuclear power plants etc.

 

Please continue any and all efforts you can, to do whatever is necessary to resolve the energy crisis.

There is a very novel but cheap, clean, permanent solution to the energy crisis, and it can be quickly developed anytime DoE undertakes to solve it by assigning a few sharp young graduate students and post doctoral scientists to one specific problem whose basic solution is already available.

 

All usable (observable) electromagnetic energy occurs in steady, continuous streams of real, observable photons, [freely] emitted by any and every source charge and dipolarity in the universe. As Whittaker showed in 1903 and 1904, any EM field or potential already decomposes into streams of freely flowing EM energy.

 

As modern physics teaches, any charge also polarizes its surrounding vacuum. There is an infinite bare charge in the middle (with infinite energy available) and the surrounding charge in the virtual state polarized vacuum is also infinite (with infinite energy available). Our instruments, peering through the external screening charge, see a finite difference, which is the classical value of what the instrument sees of the bare charge in the middle.

 

But the charge will and does pour out real EM energy freely in all directions, unceasingly and steadily, and it will continue to do so indefinitely. The charges and dipoles in the original matter of the universe have been doing that for some 13 billion years, and they have not “run down” or diminished their energy outflow in all that time.

 

So just leave an assembly of charge, dipole, etc. alone once it is formed, and it will freely pour out real, usable EM energy forever, unless the charge or dipole is then deliberately scattered. There is no observable energy input to the charge or dipole (that is known as the source charge problem, scrubbed from all the texts but still occasionally mentioned in a good physics book). We personally solved the source charge problem in 1999, publishing the solution in 2000 and 2002.

 

The charge continually receives and absorbs subquantal oscillation energy (virtual photons) from the seething vacuum, converts each sequentially absorbed virtual photon to a differential of the mass of the charge, and that is a reordering operation since mass is already unitary. Successive virtual increments of this increasing mass-energy thus coherently integrate the excitation energy to the next quantum level, whereupon the zitterbewegung of the vacuum initiates abrupt decay of the excitation by emission of a real photon.

 

The process iterates; hence the charge and its reordering and integration of disordered virtual state energy of the vacuum is a true Feynman ratchet, continually emitting real observable photons, without absorbing any observable photons. Conservation of energy is not violated, although the second law of thermodynamics is indeed violated (many things are known to violate; see Kondepudi and Prigogine, Modern Thermodynamics, 1999 printing, p. 459 for a listing of areas already known and recognized to violate the Second Law).

 

The steady emission of photons by the charge establishes and continually replenishes (at light speed) the associated EM fields and potentials produced by the source charge.

 

So the easiest thing in the world is to produce free, copious, unending flows of real EM energy – anywhere, anytime – that last indefinitely, once the assembly of charges or formation of the dipole is made. E.g., just lay a charged capacitor or electret on a permanent magnet, so that the E and H fields are at right angles. That silly thing will then sit there and steadily pour out real Poynting energy S by the little formula S = E X H. It will do so forever, unless the arrangement is destroyed.

 

That is how “difficult” it is to evoke a steady [and free] flow of EM energy from the vacuum. But our present CEM/EE model just calls that a “static” field, implying that it has no movement (translation) energy. To the contrary, Whittaker already proved that it is indeed a set of ongoing energy flows, but somehow his 1903 results (showing the decomposition of the potential to a set of energy flows) was never adopted in CEM/EE. His 1904 paper (showing that any EM field or wave decomposes into two scalar potentials with differential functions applied) did initiate what is called superpotential theory, but almost everyone ignored the internal Whittaker structure of those two scalar potentials. Donnelly and Ziolkowski, however, did add a bit to the internal structuring shown by Whittaker, but again this work has not been applied to electrical power systems.

 

So the only real energy problem is to build asymmetrical circuits that only (1) intercept and collect the outflowing free EM energy, and (2) then dissipate their excitation energy to freely power loads, except for paying for a little switching energy, and (3) do so without destroying their own external source’s dipolarity.

 

And thereby is the rub. Maxwell’s equations (1865 – 20 quaternion and quaternion like equations in 20 unknowns) were watered down very severely, after Maxwell’s death in 1879, just to obtain simpler equations easier to solve, and also to avoid the “complicated” quaternion algebra (hated by most of Maxwell’s peers). The dramatic reduction in the equation algebra was accomplished by Heaviside, Gibbs, Hertz, etc. and mostly by Heaviside – who never attended university, even though he was a very brilliant self-taught individual. Heaviside also discovered a curled component of EM energy flow that is often a trillion times the diverged Poynting component. Again, Lorentz discarded this huge energy flow component flowing from every generator and battery, because no one had the foggiest notion of any possible source for such a startling flow, a trillion times the amount of mechanical energy used to crank the shaft of the generator. It is also possible to extract some extra energy from that Heaviside curled component, and one area of physics already unknowingly is doing that since 1967.

 

Then in 1902 Lorentz placed the coup de grace on the Heaviside classical EM and electrical engineering (CEM/EE) model. Lorentz arbitrarily symmetrically regauged the already severely limited Heaviside equations, thereby forever discarding the entire vast class of permissible asymmetrical Maxwellian systems. He did it merely to get simpler equations that were easier to solve algebraically, thus eliminating the need for numerical methods (a real bear before the advent of computers).

 

Ironically, all asymmetrical EM systems (such as the source charge) that freely take excess energy from the vacuum (from asymmetrical regauging) in a form that the energy is then usable to translate electrons and thus power a load, were thus arbitrarily discarded by Lorentz. They are still arbitrarily discarded today.

 

So today, the electrical power engineers are still using those horribly mutilated Lorentz invariant equations, so that symmetry is maintained.

 

Power systems that freely receive excess energy (or even all their energy) input from their active environment, are asymmetrical systems.

 

In addition, the standard circuit practice of leaving the “external” source of potential attached to its external circuit while current is flowing, produces a Lorentz-symmetrized circuit that self-enforces Lorentz symmetry and thus self-enforces an equal back emf in the load’s dipolarity, equal to the forward emf through the external circuit’s loads and losses.

 

This means that half the freely-collected EM potential energy in the external circuit is used to do nothing but push the spent current back through the back emf of the source dipolarity, scattering the separated charges inside the generator itself and thus destroying its dipolarity. And also thus destroying its broken symmetry (check the asymmetry of opposite charges, one of the things for which Lee and Yang received a Nobel Prize in 1957) in the seething vacuum flux.

 

In short, the usual Lorentz-symmetrized circuit destroys its own free flow and collection of energy from the vacuum, faster than it powers its load. And that is done not by nature, but by very inane design universally enforced and utilized by all our electrical power engineers, electrical engineering departments and professors, etc.

 

Not one has ever calculated the true EM field in space; they still calculate the force field which only exists in charged matter. Feynman’s three volumes of sophomore physics even points this out and discusses it a bit, to no avail. Many scientists have pointed it out, but not an equation in the sad old CEM/EE model has been changed to eliminate the known falsities of the model.

 

Obviously, then, we need to build circuits that asymmetrically regauge (and thus freely change their collected potential energy work-free, as guaranteed by the gauge freedom axiom of quantum field theory). Ideally these Lorentz asymmetric circuits should momentarily pin the electrons in the external circuit while the external source of potential is connected and at nearly the speed of light potentializes the “frozen” circuit, resulting in free potentialization and free collection of real EM energy from the vacuum, via the dipolarity of the separated charges inside the generator and the broken symmetry of the “opposite charges” of that dipolarity in the seething vacuum flux. There are of course several ways to pin and unpin those electrons. Any method suitable can be utilized.

 

Then, with the energy freely collected in the external circuit as asymmetrical regauging energy, a net translation force field will also have been created freely in said external circuit, in total violation to present symmetrical Lorentz regauging practice. This force field, once the electrons are unpinned, can and will push electrons through the load, dissipating the freely collected field energy in the load to freely power it. So the asymmetrically potentialized circuit is “cocked and ready”.

 

Then the source of potential – totally undiminished in any way – is simply switched away, and the gap in the circuit reclosed by adding – say – a diode and resistor in series.

 

Thus, whenever the pinned electrons are “unpinned” and released to flow, the now-freely potentialized new circuit can freely discharge its free potential energy to powering its losses and its loads, killing its dipolarity in the process but also freely powering the load while power flows.

 

In that fashion, the system freely produces real EM power in the load, without any drain at all on the actual external dipolar source of potential. In theory, then, that source of “static” potential can be used and re-used indefinitely, without any deterioration whatsoever.

 

Once the circuit discharges, the external source of potential is again reconnected and the charges are again pinned, so that the cycle recurs.

 

By paying for just a bit of switching and control energy, in this manner (there are many others) the circuit can continue to deliver real power intermittently and regularly to the loads, without any diminution of the potential source itself.

 

This circuit is also a true Feynman ratchet.

 

This particular version of a Lorentz asymmetric system demonstrates legitimate COP>1.0 operation, and complies with all the laws of physics and thermodynamics (except for deliberate violation of the second law, as is permitted).

 

By charging intermediate capacitors (as the loads) with the pulsating energy output of that system, one can then switch and use the capacitors to smoothly and continuously power loads in a separate circuit. The capacitors can be replaced by other charged capacitors continually switched in, etc.

 

By then taking a bit of energy from the output of said charged capacitors while they are powering their loads, one can also freely power the switching and control circuit itself, merely reducing the overall output energy available to the loads by a tiny bit. This overall circuit complex  then is “self-powering”, in that all its required input energy is freely received from the active external vacuum environment, via asymmetrical regauging.

 

Conservation of energy is rigorously obeyed, since the vacuum continually inputs the necessary energy, which is transduced into usable observable EM energy by the broken symmetry of opposite charges (for which Lee and Yang received a Nobel Prize in 1957).

 

Every electrodynamicist on earth already assumes that the potential energy of a system can be freely changed at will, anytime, and work-free. It’s called “regauging”, “gauge freedom”, etc. – and it does not have to be symmetric, even though Lorentz conditioned all our electrical engineering departments, professors, and engineers to only use symmetric circuits.

 

Consequently, we actually pay the power company to engage in a giant wrestling match inside its own generators, and to deliberately always destroy its own dipole’s extraction of EM energy freely from the vacuum, and thus always lose its deliberately arranged wrestling match.

 

The present CEM/EE model is riddled with known falsities and errors, as pointed out by eminent scientists such as Nobelist Feynman, the great John Wheeler, Bunge, Margenau, etc. – to no avail. Neither NAS, NSF, NAE, or DoE has made the slightest effort to correct these known falsities (actually, scientific lies; what else can they now be called, after the total refusal of the scientific community to correct known falsities?) in the CEM/EE model, which have been in there for more than a century.

The paper also contains a buildable, testable Japanese (suppressed) overunity magnetic power system that DoE and any physics department or electrical engineering department at university can build and test to its heart’s content. The system is also easily made closed-looped and self-powering, operating analogous to a hydroelectric power plant or a solar cell array driven electrical power system. It’s doable.

Drs. Dehmer and Orbach, as astounding as it may sound, the energy problem can be solved forever, quickly and cheaply, anytime the Department of Energy will assign a few sharp young doctoral candidates and postdoctoral scientists to correct the grave falsities and errors in the standard CEM/EE model as listed in the linked papers.

 

Every EM system ever built is already powered by EM energy from the vacuum; our engineers and scientists just have failed to recognize it. Lorentz taught them to ignore it and just discard those unruly systems – which is still being universally done.

 

The ethics and the terrible need are there, and they cry out for DoE to take the lead in adding the greatest renewable energy source of all – the active vacuum – to those areas in which full-bore research is being conducted and systems developed. In the name of a long suffering humanity world wide, and in the name of our own country so beset now with the escalating energy crisis, we beseech you to have this material examined properly and rigorously.

 

Anyone discussing the electrical energy problem with you, and not discussing the source charge problem or familiar with it, is still in the dark as to what powers an electrical circuit (i.e., the actual source of the EM energy). The source of the EM field energy and potential energy in an EM system isn’t cranking the shaft of a generator, or dissipating chemical energy in a battery. Those operations only serve to furnish energy to the deliberately scattered internal charges of the battery and generator, to again force opposite charges apart in different directions and form the dipole necessary (via its asymmetry in the vacuum flux) to extract real, observable EM energy from the vacuum and send it along the connecting conductors of the external circuit.
