As farmers till their fields in Ethiopia, they at times turn up specimen of opal.  The two pendants featured below are specimen of the opals found in plowed small-farm fields.  This material occurs in degrees of white, as the two on this page show, and also in rich brown matrix.  We'll show some of the brown specimen in the near future.  This first specimen was neither cut nor polished, except for grinding a flat bottom of the stone so that it might be worn as a pendant. This is the way the stone looked when it turned up in a farmer's field. Pendant mounting was designed in wax and then cast.

The next specimen was cut from a piece of rough and polished at our studio.

Below is a specimen of what we're calling "opalwood", which is, we think presently, a variety of opalized wood. (We are awaiting a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certification, which we expect by August.) We have a large collection of gemstones cut and polished from rough found in the Gallatin Valley in southwest Montana. This rough material is available on the market at Three Forks and Bozeman outlets. Contact Montana Crucibles for sources.  Montana Crucibles does not sell rough, but will gladly direct interested buyers to the three sources.
