Hey, Chris! I'm an ex-YAFer myself (Cal State Hayward chapter 1985-87). It's been a long time since I've heard your name. We probably met at least briefly at one of the state conventions.

Gathering of Eagles is a most appropriate title for this group. The eagle is a bird that never picks a fight with anything it's own size and feeds on carrion. Ben Franklin wrote

Good use of the definer "Weimar" to descript the Repugnicans today...

The Conservatives? of the Weimar Republic tried to OUTDO the Socialist in their builing of Der Staat Babylon...so THEY could run the machinery....
and gee look what LEGALLY and LOGICALLY followed...

a minor error though...Mr. Grigg said the Communist dream of takeover after the NAZIs DIDNT OCCUR..yet it did...AFTER the war...ie EAST GERMANY...but my picayune aside this WAS A GREAT ARTICLE..

I used to be part of a crowdYAF that not military per se was a tool of the MIC and we would go and protest and scream and rip up signs and posters and flyers et al..so I can relate a bit to this..

as I and MOST of our group(out her in SoCal at least)came out OPPOSED to the First Gulf War..and we would go and demonstrate AGAINST the war...marching with lib antiwar groups we used to demonstrate AGAINST!!! and we got to experience the venal and vitriolic hatred of the Weimar Repulicans..objects/spit/pushing/sign rippage etc... all while we(I) were waving our Flags and ANTI UNITEDNATIONS SIGNS!!! attacked by conservatives!! not a fun experience..
Just wait til the war with Iran...

Gen. Patton was telling the truth and so he had to go.

The poor father, can only imagine the suffering he is going through. The imaginary "streets of gold" that too many in other countries believe America is paved with, just isn't so.
I always thought Costa Rica was one of the places that a freedom-loving person who was fed up with the USSA could flee to down the road, maybe conditions there are worse than many libertarians have led us to believe. IN any event the young man died for what? Just a waste of precious human life. That the father should be treated so shabbily really reflects on the current state of Republicans.

That faux-Republicans, NEO-CONS, like FREE REPUBLIC, were all behind the war, the Patriot Act, the destruction of our freedoms and a Police State.

Some Republicans, e.g. RON PAUL, are good men, good patriots.
Paul Craig Roberts is another good one as is Patrick J. Buchanan who told the truth about this war from day one.

Again, a masterful post.

I read a column recently that made the point that the two major parties are "two wings of the same bird of prey." A more succinct and a more apt description could not be made.

That the Idiot King quietly counsels the Lizard Queen in matters of hegemonic occupation is not a surprise. His call for a "South Korean model" in Iraq (a far cry from the six-week, neocon cakewalk that Americans were sold) displays the "commitment" in blood and treasure that he expects to extract from America's serfs.

News reports state that we have already spent $567 billion on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Another request for $200 billion is on the table, and the drums are sounding for strikes on Iran.

Last evening, Hannity & Colmes ran a segment of blatant agitprop titled "Target: Iran." This Saturday, they will run a follow-up program titled, I think, "Iran: A Ticking Time bomb."

One of the points brought out last evening was that a Iranian poll shows 92 percent disaffection with the Iranian leadership.

Could there be a greater folly than striking Iran and turning this broad-based disaffection into widespread affection for Ahmadinejad and the ruling mullahs?

It is unfortunate that young men like Carlos volunteer for a life in the military in the first place. I don't want to play "blame the victim," just as I wouldn't blame a coal-miner for dying in a cave-in, but certainly a potential coal-miner and a potential soldier should understand the risks involved in the occupation they are considering.

Carlos was 20 years old when he died, correct? This means he was at a minimum 17 when he joined up (I think that's the limit?) which would've been three years ago. The war started 4 years ago (2003). To volunteer to join the criminal action that had been ongoing for a year already at that point, to willingly put one's life in the balance, seems like the height of irresponsibility and recklessness.

There is no solution here in protesting this particular action (the War in Iraq), because just as soon as any protest resolves this matter -- as if protest actually accomplishes anything -- it will be replaced by another disaster, say, war with Iran, or whoever is the enemy du jour.

The only solution is to denounce the legitimacy of the political apparatus as a whole, seek to disengage as much as possible from that apparatus on an individual level and, I think this is the hardest part, wait patiently.

The government (like all governments) rests on consent! Revoke your consent and it will fall. And certainly volunteering for the military is not a way to revoke consent, nor is running for office of any kind.

By the way, the Web site of our local paper (midwestern U.S.) allows the posting of comments, and by the nature of the vast majority of comments, we're in for a world of hurt. Not only do most posters fail to express any disdain for, of fear of, a transition to an executive-branch dictatorship, they actually indicate a clear and active support for it. And the jingoism is so thick you could cut it with a mil-spec knife. For one like me, who believes the People do get the government they want (right or wrong), this is truly frightening.
