Now I think this is a bit of a stretch. You must put things in context. The Mormons had, only a few years before, been driven from state to state, had an extermination order issued against them by the govenor of Missouri, and have been thoroughly persecuted from their founding. They then emigrate to Utah to find peace. At the time of the massacre, the US Army is on its way to Utah, to put down the Mormon rebellion and Parley P Pratt(mormon apostle) is murdered in Arkansas. So you have a persecuted minority who is forced to leave the states, having the US Army breathing down their necks, and a beloved apostle murdered in the east - this all creates an atmosphere of extrodinary tension and paranoia. This in no way excuses the murders at Moutain Meadows, but to say that Brigham Young was infecting his followers with war fever is to me false.

Isn't it ironic that, as you say, the Prez knows more than us, but that in no way excuses or sanctifies his actions when it comes to the murder and destruction rained down on the innocent. No matter what "explanations" are offered up they're nothing more than lies and find their origin in the father of lies. That they saddle up so cozily to him makes it all too clear where their true allegiance is.

It's rather telling that Emma Smith (Joseph Smith Jr's wife) broke from the church when Brigham Young took over. I was raised in the REORGANIZED Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which was founded by JS Jr's son once he was an adult. I'm no longer actively involved with that church, but there is a world of difference doctrinally.
