It had to be a few years after I left the employ of Uncle Sam that I realized at no time was I given a pep talk or reminder from my training cadre why I was needed in the Army.

Other than receiving training on Soviet aircraft/ armor recognition, and seeing at the range plastic pop-up targets resembling a dwarf Soviet soldier complete with red star on his helmet, there was no mention of a soldier's true purpose.

Now I know why.

They could've easily squeezed in a block of instruction on Americanism if they eliminated the hours long sexual harassment brainwashing.

But they don't want to do that, do they?

I enlisted, or should I say as a seventeen year old with no idea about how the world operated and was "told" to leave the house or else, in 1980. My parents made it clear that the Air Force was the only "acceptable" choice so I dutifully went.

It was crazy from day one. And a more dysfunctional "family" you could not have found. You made friends, you had to or else isolate yourself like some hermit, as some did in their dorm room, only to emerge when their "8-5" duty called.

Ronnie Raygun was president and I'd in my very first stab at being a "grown-up" had voted for him. It was a time of the big bad Russian bear with Ron staring them down in typical Hollywood fashion.

Did I have a "clue" as to what I was doing or how the world worked? None whatsoever! It was enough to survive and make sense of living day to day with idiotic orders and the apparent back stabbing ladder climbers.

I realized after getting out and through other brushes with "government", in all its many shades and variations, that I truly loathe the bureaucratic mindset. The "get under your skin" tick-like blood sucking mentality it promotes. And above all I vowed never to go back in or let my children be drawn into its maw.

I've said this to people before that there is no reason for a standing army. If the populace doesn't believe its worth fighting and dying for, and that means with their own weapons... untouched by gun grabbers... then why allow someone to force you to die for their "pronouncements" of "freedom".

Even more, why allow someone to die by proxy for your armchair beating, TV indoctrinating lies! Either the warmonger needs to send their own flesh and blood, or better yet themselves, into the field to die, or shut up and find another way.

I agree. This is why I try hard now to tell anyone who will listen not to enlist if at all possible. Even though its "voluntary," it's still really just plain servitude disguised as an exciting "career path" or other half-truth.

Whether the State ever is frank and transparent (which is an oxymoron, it never is) in its advertisements to attract enlistees into its military tentacle, or not, it just doesn't matter. It's still servitude and you're but a mere fresh young human pawn for them to play on their chess table to be captured or killed only for their benefit, glory, or desire in the geopolitical arena.

After all, if you ask the average serf ...uh citizen... why they want to join the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines, the usual quick, off the cuff answer is that they can gain skills and possibly obtain a higher education for better job prospects later after their time in service. In other words, it's more often than not a decision based on economics more than a "love of service" or "love of country" in some extraneous and altruistic sense.

Now there are and have been exceptions of course (i.e. Pat Tillman and others) throughout our history. But from my observation, they are not the rule, but the exception.

That was surely my reason and most of my buddies' reasons for joining at the time I did in 1984. It never crossed my youngster mind about "protecting freedom" or "defending the country" in a big picture sense as the impetus for enlisting. Well, on second thought, I can't say "never crossed my mind," perhaps, but it was never, ever the primary motivation.

Still, promoting state dependence, in essence - no matter whether chosen for economic reasons, educational reasons, or otherwise - as we who were motivated by such reasons were demonstrating is no excuse. We were really nothing but pawns.

Regardless of the character of the messenger in question, anyone who's heard (and groked) the Rangel "universal service" rant or the Kerry flap about being "cannon-fodder" should have at least a clue of that fact by now ;).
