This is the fourth part of my review of Stephen Lendman’s article about Russell Means’ re-proclamation of the “Republic of Lakota.”

As I was writing this, the unexpected (though not surprising) occurred: Russell Means (Oyate Wacinyapin) died at age 72 near Porcupine, Oglala Sioux Tribe (Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota) early this morning, from the cancer he said he had overcome. That makes this “re-proclamation” virtually his last public act.

Russell proposes a solution that history has shown is NOT a solution: to create another government, a government built on the same lies as the government it is seceding from. (Lies such as “treaty rights” and “group rights” and “the world owes me a living.”) He wants to do what a hundred different countries in Africa and Latin America did: throw off their “colonial oppressors” in favor of “homegrown” oppressors. Because Lakota land was once stolen, he thinks that the Creator has given him a right to steal the land of other people. Because Lakota were (and are) abused and neglected and mistreated and used, he figures that it is someone else’s turn to be abused: the 95% Non-Lakota and the 90% Non-AmerInd of his would-be Republic.

Sir: Thanks for the fine article on Mr. means. Having listened to him being interviewed by John Stadtmiller on Republic Broadcasting Network, it was apparent that Mr. means had a more substantial grasp of the founding of our nation than most of us put together.
He was well spoken,logical, accurate in his facts, and brought many historical/present-day parallels to light. His distain for the phoney financial system was spot on.
Rest well, Russell, you have my eternal respect.

Seems that over all these decades and generations the FBI has been setting people up. No different than the latest Federal Reserve "suspect", Christmas plots in Oregon or the very first Twin Towers parking lot explosion. Yesterday's 'Communist' is today's 'Muslim Terrorist'.

I spent all my 'skoolin' years in Oregon. Here in the Pacific NW we have remnants of the Native culture, mostly in names of towns and geographical features. Even those are slowly being erased, as locations with 'offensive' names such as Squaw Peak are renamed so as not to offend. Now I've NEVER yet spoke to a single Indian who was offended, but those in direct employ of the State can always be trotted out to complain on camera. Even our local newspaper refuses to print team names like 'Washington Redskins'. They don't take issue with the reservations on which most Natives still reside, or the miserable conditions under which most Natives still live. But at least they don't offend Portlanders' sensibilities by writing Kansas City Chiefs.

In all those years I school I never was introduced to Chief Joseph (buried in the town of Joseph in far NE Oregon), or to the literally hundreds and hundreds of Native bands than inhabited both the coastal and intermountain and desert regions of Cascadia. These semi-autonomous bands made up the tribes, such as the Cowlitz, the Tillamook, the Palouse, the Shoshone. Alas, such history is absent, with the occasional exception being a field trip to a 'Long House' in order to view some tribal masks and dances.

While this has nothing directly to do with your article, Will, it does tie to a seminal point Russell Means expoused: The Establishment will not be satiated until every remnant and memory of the Native is expunged from memory. The war against the Red Man is eternal (in some ways similar to Britain's eternal war against the Irish).

I pray Russell Means finds peace in the afterlife.

Seriously? Did you explore any of the links? Did you ever achieve a passing grade on a reading comprehension exam (in the English language)? Or are you just some kind of piecework-compensated astroturfing troll? Here is a summary:
The American Indian was violently disenfranchised by invading Western European settlers, largely for the enrichment of a few government "leaders" and their civilian sponsors. Russell Means stood against that aggression, and by extension, against all those who, for their own personal gain, would negate the principal of self-ownership. For that affront against the US Statist Collective, he was subjected to life-long libel, slander, intimidation, and physical attack by those who depend upon the subjugation of individual freedom for maintenance of their (unmerited) high-flying lifestyles. Mr. Grigg's article is a well-deserved eulogy to Mr. Means. And I'll wager that you now have no better understandaing of the issue or this essay than you did before.
