The people closest to Mr. McNelis -- his daughter and his wife -- believed he was innocent. As explained above, his daughter was abducted by authorities after the charges were filed and McNelis was threatened with a felony prosecution if he defended his parental rights during the emergency shelter hearing. Even if he had been a drug dealer -- something the Ada County Sheriff and Prosecutor failed entirely to prove -- the treatment inflicted on McNelis and his family would have to be regarded as abominable.

As someone who has never used drugs and does not intend to do so in the future, I would far rather take my chances with narco-entrepreneurs than with armed enforcers of prohibition.

Your tax dollars could not bury the lies but the government lawyers did get the jury to disrespect the victim as a person. Likely with having the jury believing he had it coming anyway, regardless that the cops lied. If so, that had nothing to do with the case and is a complete scam, that he is personally a bad guy whom deserved whatever came his way. By allowing that kind of defence by the defendants at the trial, the judge went along with fraud upon the court. He's still a crime victim yet again by having suffered more crimes against him by the state. The jury agreed that he was a crime victim, but the jury was toyed with to a point that they disrespected him with contempt. The trial was a fraud.

A civil award would have been paid by the tax victims residing within Ada County, not by the offenders -- who had no skin in the game, as it were.

Ada County spent a huge sum and deployed a platoon of attorneys in an attempt to defeat McNelis in court. He took them on and beat them soundly. Irrespective of the size of the award, that outcome is a straight-up win by any honest reckoning.

the reason things are as they unfolded in this case is demonstrated by the jury outcome: they couldn't ignore the facts, but, regardless, sided with the cops by the award.

the salient point is the jury SIDED with the cops by their award and that is why the abuse continues - too many let them get away with it.
