According to some recent "expert" opinions, the best outcome that we can now hope for in Iraq is a power grab by some yet unknown "strong" figure, perhaps a general, who will then impose order and stability and thus provide an excuse for America's military to leave. In other words, we've blown at least a trillion dollars, killed, maimed, imprisoned, tortured, and displaced several million Iraqis, largely destroyed their infrastructure, and sustained roughly thirty thousand American casualties (so far) only to hope for the rise of another Saddam-like figure of uncertain loyalty to American interests as a best possible result.

Dixie... Germans believed they were decent God fearing "Christian" folk as well. Never mind that like robots they marched onto war. Sad, shocking, but so true.

There is a delusion so strong amongst Americans these days that you can cut it with a knife. Its like a horror that shall remain nameless for fear it will spring into action, yet it lurks continuously in our peripheral vision menacingly reminding us of its presence.

Willful ignorance with regards to this evil manner of thinking, of wrapping murder in childish excuses, is simply disgusting.

There are blind, brain-damaged, Yanks out in the land today who if Jesus himself stood before them and chastised them strongly for their hypocrisy would pick up stones to kill him!

It would be no small thing to say that He wouldn't "know" most of us.

A clear case of illogic about a moral compass or the lack thereof are the various docudramas about the Nazi regime shown from time to time and especially concerning the Nürnberg trials.

They say that just "following orders of a superior" didn't cut it and was no excuse. I guess it's assumed for some odd reason (from thin air maybe?) that they would know right from wrong, good from evil.

Arggh! How are they going to know that? Based on WHAT? What would these same people who spout that nonsense say if someone within the Regime HERE decided to disobey an order instead of meekly following orders from their superior because the underling claimed it was WRONG?? I guess they'd retort with something like, "What makes it wrong? Who made you the Decider?!"

Doh! Really??

How can anyone with a modicum of sense have expected those low-rung Nazis to act in defiance of their respective Decider when no one would expect the same defiance in the face of our own Decider?? And when there is a concerted effort underway to make moral relativism the supreme contemporary mindset of our society nowadays?

If gassin' folk was the LAW of the land and you had no moral compass otherwise, or yours was rudderless, you would think since it's the LAW, it must be right.

I really believe that many folk, even the presumably highly-educated folk, don't even think through the logic/illogic of these positions they loudly spew out in docudramas, in sound bites, and in movies and such. Yet, folk just mindlessly slurp it all up.

Well, I think it's going to be a steep uphill battle to convince folk, like your correspondent and millions of others in lockstep, to even think rationally for themselves about positions they've simply adopted à la mode on critical matters, much less convincing them to change their position.

Hehe. Indeed, but it's been a mindset Americans have harbored for generations now, unfortunately. It's not a condition that suddenly appeared during the Bush era. One of my grandmothers always spoke so kindly and admirably of FDR and what she called his initiatives and actions (mostly "make-work" projects) to lift us out of the Great Depression and so on and so forth. Nonsense, of course, as WWII is what really got the economy churning again - at least the military-industrial complex side of it at least - but nevertheless, she and millions of Americans of that era believed exactly that. Then with the 1950s and America's economic primacy of the era, many Americans simply thought it was somehow our birthright and natural that WE produced the best and most during this period when, in fact, it was only because much of the rest of the world was simply wrecked and demoralized and attempting to rebuild.

Most who suffer from those afflictions -- and I say this in utter sincerity -- are good and decent people. They are not depraved or consciously dishonest. They simply don't understand the extent to which they have surrendered control over their opinions to paid professionals in the art of manipulation.

Will, what is your definition of "good and decent" people? I know I'm not and am still on the uphill myself in that department. After all, it's not like someone with a depraved mind or is of a reprobate mindset will ALWAYS be acting accordingly and ALWAYS thinking accordingly. Some of the most vile and wicked folk in history were as saints to their families, protected their women and children, etc. That didn't make them any less vile and wicked. I'm not sayin' this person is or is not depraved or reprobate either, I'm simply illustrating the mild distinction or rather, quite often I think, the clear lack of one when you get right down to the metal.

As Francis Bacon was reputed to say, "Prosperity doth best discover vice, adversity doth best discover virtue." The problem is that when one's moral compass is rudderless, as most Americans' moral compasses are these days, due to extreme prosperity (be it real or debt-financed, i.e. faux), coupled with no foundational belief and value system, ANY person in a position of authority can easily manipulate and sway that person without breakin' a sweat. That's the nature of the beast we call deception. If someone is grounded deeply enough in the Word, has their moral compass aligned with the divine author of morality, it's extremely difficult to deceive such people. Not that it can't be done, but it certainly wouldn't be as easy and trivial as this correspondent so aptly, and unfortunately, demonstrates.

I agree with what Madison said about continual warfare, but that's not the ONLY condition that can result in a "degeneracy of manners and of morals." He apparently must have thought that the populace would always keep their moral compass aligned properly, minus that ONE simple debilitating condition. However, there are other debilitating conditions that can afflict us and deceive us, like prosperity through debt or dependence. And on top of that when you add the total saturation of the media-entertainment complex with continual mind-numbing psychobabble about aliens, UFO phenomena, psychics, the circus dramas of endless police chases, Michael Moore's seemingly endless supply of pro-socialist propaganda films, the regimented lockstep-with-the-Führer talk-radio elephant brigades, ad nauseam, ad infinitum, and the fact that being a couch potato with a huge HDTV and/or home-theater system is a oft-heard typical commoner desire, it's no wonder the commoners are being deceived so easily!

The point made in the self-exalting comment above was made in reference to the fact that my correspondent recently saw a daughter graduate from boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. On the strength of this fact -- namely, that he has offered a child to kill and die on behalf of the State, the eternal enemy of freedom and decency-- this fellow asserts a proprietary claim on freedom, while condescending, at least for now, to grant that gift to those of us who are not similarly inclined to feed their children into the maw of the War Machine.

This particular correspondent may indeed be as you describe, but as I've mentioned before in your comments, there are many thousands of folk who join the military solely for economic reasons, NOT because they have some hasty desire to kill or be killed in a foreign imperial entanglement.

As Kerry's uncharacteristic candor made clear not so long ago, make sure your kids become "college boys" and "college girls" to avoid the only option otherwise to become cannon fodder. How true, the richies in every society have always managed to avoid the trenches in any endeavor (righteous or wicked), especially war. Yes, I know that's always been the case, but I also know that it's also those same men and women who happen to survive, literally, their tenure in those trenches that are spat upon and treated like shit, not the richie government Decider who sent them there in the first damn place.

At first I simply pitied this man's failure to understand the difference between our executive branch's current "hot" war in the Middle East and the "Cold War" between the USSR and the USA. But then, when thinking back to the days of the real Cold War, I realized something: the Cold War spanned 50-some years. And now your correspondent informs that "we are in the first decade of a war that will most likely last ... for the next 50 years or so." Hmmmm... Eureka! The advocates of the "new" cold war (Cold War II) want it to span 50-some years, too! So maybe the same group of fellas that were behind the original Cold War are also behind Cold War II. (Little wonder we're seeing the same kind of widespread fear-mongering that led to my being forced to dive under my desk in the 3rd grade.)

But if we were "forced" into Cold War I in self-defense because of Soviet expansionism, and if Cold War II is a "forced" response to Islamic Crusaders who are trying to force our wymen folk to wear burkas, then how could the same fellas be behind both?

Is it at all possible that certain "Internationalists" discovered that Cold War I was such a resounding success, for their private purposes, that they're wanting a double-header?

And, Will, does this all mean we can't expect to see that "peace dividend" from the end of Cold War I anytime soon?

For the life of me I cannot understand why some parents are so eager to send their kids off to a foreign land. If there were a clear and present danger to our country and my son voluntarily went and fought whoever was trying to kill us, then I'd be very proud. As it stands, our government has instigated warring middle-eastern factions, and doesn't understand the volatility, culture, or religion of that region of the world. Sign my kids up to go fight an idea? Freakin crazy people!
