Excellent article. I think this "bailout" is the equivalent of the British Parliament's Stamp Act, which many colonial Americans saw as the last straw in their experience of British economic tyranny. America is finally coming to life, and it is angry! That's why the American combat troops are coming home to be used against us. The fascist elite know what's coming, and they want it to happen! An insurrection will be a perfect excuse for martial law, the permanent "suspension" of what's left of the Constitution, the permanent "suspension" of elections, and the herding of the population into the FEMA camps, where the "reliable" people will be sorted out from the "troublemakers". The "reliables" will come out to live lives of abject poverty and slavery, and the "troublemakers" will never come out of the camps alive. The imperial kleptocracy now expects it to immediately fork over $700 billion simply because they have labeled the request urgent. From the comments of KongressKlowns in the hearings this week, it's clear that enraged constituents are letting them have it with both barrels. Several of them have said that constituent comments are running 99 to 1 against the bailout.

On the other hand, the wholly arbitrary number of "$700 billion" has become a meme, as it gets repeated over and over, even by opponents of the bailout. And you can hear the usual trial balloons of compromise -- IF limits on executive compensation are added; IF the Treasury gets warrants or preferred stock in the institutions availing themselves of the program; THEN we can make a deal and go home to campaign.

Warren Buffett extracted astonishingly harsh terms from Goldman Sachs -- a ten (10) percent interest rate on preferred stock, plus IN THE MONEY warrants -- that is, call options with a strike price below the current market price of GS stock, giving them an immediate intrinsic value. These are terms that venture capitalists typically would demand from a bunch of 20-something tech entrepreneurs operating from their garage -- high interest, plus an ownership stake. If blue-chip Goldman Sachs is compelled to accede to such terms, what happens to the lesser denizens of corporate America -- not to mention the forsaken "little people"?

The Ponzi economy is collapsing, as every confidence scheme must do. Shoving taxpayers into the role of "bottom-pickers" and "greater fools" to bail out Wall Street is both wrong and futile. As Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) said in a riveting address to the House (available on YouTube), we want those fat bonuses and securitization fees disgorged, right down to "the tires on your Mercedes." Rock on, Marcy!

My instinct is that one way or another, this shameful deal is going to get done. Bushco's "push mode" will be (1) crash the stock market; (2) crash the dollar; (3) crash some more buildings. Step by step, there's a bailout in your future. But there's no rule of law, and no constitution. We've moved on from such quiant notions ... haven't we.

Your postings are always excellent. Thanks for this one. Ten years ago, most people poo-pooed Y2K, saying, in essence, this country was too big to fail. But those of us who knew better, DID prepare for the worst. Now that the decline of our country is moving at the speed of a runaway freight train, those Y2K preppers now know that those preparations were not for a potential crisis, but one of impending actuality a decade hence. Our family moved from the city to a rural location where we have the space to raise our own food. Our buckets of food staples, medical supplies, etc. are safely stored in the basement. What some of us saw 10 yrs ago should be a wake-up call for those today. If you see a problem, the prudent thing is to make plans to see you through it.

While the federal apparatus grows more out of control, at least the local authorities here in New Orleans seemed to have learned a few lessons from the post-Katrina stormtrooper fustercluck. This time around, when Gustav hit, the city announced that while no one would be dragged out their homes at gunpoint and have their weapons confiscated, no one choosing to stay (like me) could count on any city services either. You can stay if you want, but if you get injured and call 911, you can't count on an ambulance showing up. Fair enough; that's the way it should be. The public outrage the city received after the post-Katrina goonfest evidently shamed the city into better behavior. Police and National Guard simply patrolled the streets to discourage looters, which worked remarkably well. There was very little looting this time in a city which for several days was down to less than 10% its normal population (evacuation). More importantly, law-abiding citizens were left alone. I believe that it was the public outrage expressed by people like yourself over the stormtrooper excesses last time that brought about a much more benign official response this time. For a change, the guys wearing uniforms were actually here to help; however, I can't help but think that this may have been the last time I witness such a thing.

I sure hope we're both wrong, Will. I hate being right all the time.

On the other hand, the chances are pretty good that you'll slave away at some miserable job the rest of your life. That's because you were in all likelihood born into the wrong social class. Let's face it -- you're a member of the working caste. Sorry!

As a result, you don't have the education, upbringing, connections, manners, appearance, and good taste to ever become one of us. In fact, you'd probably need a book the size of the yellow pages to list all the unfair advantages we have over you. That's why we're so relieved to know that you still continue to believe all those silly fairy tales about "justice" and "equal opportunity" in America.

Of course, in a hierarchical social system like ours, there's never been much room at the top to begin with. Besides, it's already occupied by us -- and we like it up here so much that we intend to keep it that way. But at least there's usually someone lower in the social hierarchy you can feel superior to and kick in the teeth once in a while. Even a lowly dishwasher can easily find some poor slob further down in the pecking order to sneer and spit at. So be thankful for migrant workers, prostitutes, and homeless street people.

Always remember that if everyone like you were economically secure and socially privileged like us, there would be no one left to fill all those boring, dangerous, low-paid jobs in our economy. And no one to fight our wars for us, or blindly follow orders in our totalitarian corporate institutions. And certainly no one to meekly go to their grave without having lived a full and creative life. So please, keep up the good work!

You also probably don't have the same greedy, compulsive drive to possess wealth, power, and prestige that we have. And even though you may sincerely want to change the way you live, you're also afraid of the very change you desire, thus keeping you and others like you in a nervous state of limbo. So you go through life mechanically playing your assigned social role, terrified what others would think should you ever dare to "break out of the mold."

Naturally, we try to play you off against each other whenever it suits our purposes: high-waged workers against low-waged, unionized against non-unionized, Black against White, male against female, American workers against Japanese against Mexican against.... We continually push your wages down by invoking "foreign competition," "the law of supply and demand," "national security," or "the bloated federal deficit." We throw you on the unemployed scrap heap if you step out of line or jeopardize our profits. And to give you an occasional break from the monotony of our daily economic blackmail, we allow you to participate in our stage-managed electoral shell games, better known to you ordinary folks as "elections." Happily, you haven't a clue as to what's really happening -- instead, you blame "Aliens," "Tree-hugging Environmentalists," "Niggers," "Jews," Welfare Queens," and countless others for your troubled situation.

We're also very pleased that many of you still embrace the "work ethic," even though most jobs in our economy degrade the environment, undermine your physical and emotional health, and basically suck your one and only life right out of you. We obviously don't know much about work, but we're sure glad you do!

Of course, life could be different. Society could be intelligently organized to meet the real needs of the general population. You and others like you could collectively fight to free yourselves from our domination. But you don't know that. In fact, you can't even imagine that another way of life is possible. And that's probably the greatest, most significant achievement of our system -- robbing you of your imagination, your creativity, your ability to think and act for yourself.

So we'd truly like to thank you from the bottom of our heartless hearts. Your loyal sacrifice makes possible our corrupt luxury; your work makes our system work. Thanks so much for "knowing your place" -- without even knowing it!
