George Washington tried to make indians truly a part of the republic sadly many fools who brought many of the bad habits from Britain got there opportunity once he died.

Sad when a revolution goes wrong. And horrible men see a new nation as ripe for plundering anything they hate can die.

I do not fault some countries in not starting any revolution despite oppression they face there is no guarantee the new ruler will be better.

I'm thinking the ID Policy either originated or was cleared through "legal". For if a student suffers at the hands of a trespasser the "victim's" parents would be screaching for more to be done to protect their children. It would result in costly litigation, marches on campus attended by hairy men weraing Che t-shirts,candle light vigils,and the creation of two or more "Committees for the (fill in the blanks).

The safety of our campus community is of paramount importance to me.

I have to assign blame to the commoners for this. Not all of it, mind you, but for some of it. Why? Think about it a minute, Will. If the average commoner wasn't so S-A-F-E-T-Y crazed, imbued easily into their minds since 9/11, this kind of police activity would be rare!!

When someone asks me why I would discount a heightened police presence or activity in some given situation, with the tagline, "What about your safety?" I tell them I'll take care of my own safety as should anyone else who cares to be among the living. IT'S NOT THE JOB OF THE POLICE TO PROVIDE FOR ANYONE'S SAFETY, other than themselves, irrespective of what you hear or read in the media!! Yet, folk continue to presume the thought of the police as their ultimate individual protectors. The term "serve and protect" is NOT FOR OR ABOUT serving and protecting THE INDIVIDUAL, but the community as a whole against other organized entities, be they other government (usually federal) tentacles or criminal syndicates. But YOU as an INDIVIDUAL have to serve and protect (defend) YOURSELF.

Now, if communities en masse demanded that this S-A-F-E-T-Y nonsense be dropped from the local and state police mandates and put in its proper community-centric perspective, we'd see a change I think. Unlikely? Of course! We've allowed the "safety" mantra to propagate for far too long and nowadays folk cannot clearly connect the dots b/w that "safety über alles" mindset and what happened here in the UCLA library.

However, it's quite clear that the "safety" preachers, such as Norman Abrams, surely can connect the dots.

If you parlay orally as exquisitely and concisely what you manage to put "to pen," Will, and I was a "talking head" on the boobie or radio, I'd concede defeat before the battle ;). Then again, only "Hannitized" sound bites are afforded enough time to be propagated over the airwaves, leaving no time for thoughtful replies to anything. They can't allow the herd any time to THINK about what's being discussed, ya see.

Thanks for exposing the reality of what entailed the flawed concept of "Manifest Destiny." Your detailed examination in this series of Indian mistreatment is part of the evidence of that.

that indian story was atrocious. just to think that that guy had his son killed for no reason. a few other things i noticed:

did you notice how well people spoke english back then? man! read like shakespear. having been a CO, and a PM, i have seen some atrocious writting samples in the military. there was this one case in tirrenia, italy. wish i could remember it. had us rolling in laughter!

next point: kinda ironic that lincoln was president during all of this. i guess COL Chivington had a great role model. ;.-(

A very, very sad and shameful story, but expertly written.

Unfortunately, most "conservatives" today would consider you a bleeding-heart liberal, and probably a traitor, for daring to write kind things about the Indians and unkind things about the U.S. military. They're also the same ones who will believe (a) the Indians just got what was coming to them and (b) anyone our government rounds up in the name of terrorism--at least when a Republican is in charge--is also deserving of whatever he gets. It's not a gulag to them because it isn't happening to them or to people they care about. See: Bonhoeffer, Dietrich.

As disheartening as the story is, I'm looking forward to part III.
