My sleep schedule is once again, seriously screwed. I hate feeling like this. Like a particularly dumb and indecisive zombie.

Been ponderin’ lately on just why The Venture Bros. works so well for me. To be more specific, why a cartoon that’s part parody, part ironic commentary on pop culture, and part serious action adventure serial, can make me actually tear up and cause chills up-and-down my spine on occasion. Yesterday, wandering blithely about the net, [...]

Perhaps you can tell from the image above that this is not high quality literature. Sure, there’s been many a quality SF novel with a terrible cover, but this one is especially egregious. And “Hope Hubris”? Come on. Like many science fiction writers, Piers Anthony is a demented pervert. That’s not to say he’s a terrible [...]

Recently I saw the very dumb, but just entertaining enough film From Paris With Love. Travolta kind of reprises his wisecracking assassin role from Pulp Fiction, except it’s not very good because his lines are written by Besson, not Tarantino. Not that Besson isn’t a good writer, it just doesn’t gel. Anyway, that’s not the point. [...]

Sorry I’ve been so quiet the last few days. Had a toothache, which is finally going away. Weather changeing does it every time. But at least it’s changing to nice weather. Will try to do some postin’ later.

The Lives of Harry Lime Orson Welles reprised his role of Harry Lime from the celebrated 1949 film adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel The Third Man. The radio series is a “prequel” to the film, and depicts the many misadventures of con-artist Lime in a somewhat lighter tone than the character’s villainy in the film.

According to my tracking data, the POD company has recieved my money order and the fulfillment process has begun! Haha. Told ya I was watchin’ and would keep you updated.

…via Jesse Walker at Reason, on the traditional opposition party response to the State Of The Union address: Given all the limits of the format, and given that hardly anyone bothers to watch it anyway, is there any good reason to keep the opposition response at all? It’s a relatively recent invention—the first one was aired [...]

Here’s a pretty cool Reason interview with Jackson Publick (aka Christopher McCullough) on his Cartoon Network show The Venture Bros. As I tell anyone who will stand still long enough, I consider TVB to be one of the best shows on television. It’s great fun that just so happens to tell great stories at [...]

Haha. Sometimes you’re pleasantly surprised. The Hurt Locker swept everything but the acting categories. James Cameron got showed up by his ex-ol’ lady. What are the odds? It would have been funnier if Lynda Hamilton had won an acting Oscar and Gale Ann Hurd had produced Locker, but the universe only bends so [...]

Annoyed not because I missed it, but beacause I didn’t realize it, till just now. 24hours unremembered, passed unremarked, recalled in glimpses, Can you even call that a day anymore? (pilltimetopilltime thatsaday. pilltime to pilltime that’s today.) Can you even call that a day anymore?

One of the downsides of getting older is the simple fact that you don’t find those mind-blowing concepts as often as when you were a kid. This is partly due to having heard most-of-it before, and partly from the normal process of having many ordinary things to worry about. But they still can happen, and when [...]

Found this Gary North piece to be both entertaining and educational: one of the simplest and clearest explanations of the superiority of the gold standard and what really causes recessions. And all in the service of smacking around a particularly odious neo-con! Good stuff! Note: you have just read a hatchet job. I am very good [...]

Linked a fantastic site there on the sidebar, under the above rather grandiose title. It’s actually called, simply, Atomic Rockets. It’s everything you ever wanted to know about nuclear powered spacecraft, both hypothetical and those that could be built today if we weren’t oppressed by a culture of safety fetishists. The main goal of the [...]

Despite being a spin off of BSG, a clear descendant of Trek and Wars, Caprica is a new breed of SF show. It’s a final, complete break from Trek, which seems like it’s been the model for all SF series… forever. Oh, Starship Enterprise, you promised us so much freedom. You promised to show us strange [...]

The Romans had a tradition called a Triumph. It was a big parade / party thrown by a returning conqueror. Along with his soldiers and of course himself, the parade would feature strange things brought back from foreign lands. Giraffes, slaves that looked kind of funny. A key focus of the whole production would be [...]

The (insured and tracked!) money order is off to the POD company. The first batch of books should be headed out soon. I’m keeping an evil eye on this one. I’ve also finagled a way to get a PayPal account set-up, so I’ll be able to take orders (and order books) that way very soon. I’ll [...]

I’ve been having quite a bit of fun with a shareware program called Comic Life (available here as a 30-day trial). It’s a simple-to-use, very intuitive program that allows you to create comic books using most types of graphics files. You choose a layout, alter and tweak it to your liking, then load your graphics [...]
