The Improv
by
Tom Spooner

This month's oddball tip:
Booze- Ever get the urge to make your own booze, but aren't up on still construction? No sweat; try "fractionation" instead of distillation. This is the process of separating or purifying by freezing and removing the unfrozen remnant. Brew your beer, wine, or mead, pour it into a large shallow pan, and stick it in your freezer. Once it's frozen over, pour off the still liquid alcohol. Drink it now, or repeat the freezing process until you don't get ice anymore. In the winter, just put the pan outside.

Advice Feedback:

Rating = Bad
General Comments = who says that is illegal to build a gun in the USA? If one can legally buy a gun, one can legally build a conventional gun. Great freakin' advice column.

BTW, only fools subject their kids to government school mindwashing....

The Improv is a how-to column, not advice; but I do respond to feedback.

A couple of people called me out on that. OK, I could have said that better. We're talking about a fifteen year-old. My understanding of the law it that it is illegal for him to build a gun. And it's damned well illegal for him to have constructed a destructive device. But to be more general and more precise: Whether or not I think it's right, going about the business of building guns without a license is illegal in the US. Who says?

18 U.S.C 923(a)(1)(B)

-STATUTE-
      (a) No person shall engage in the business of importing,
manufacturing, or dealing in firearms, or importing or
manufacturing ammunition, until he has filed an application with
and received a license to do so from the Secretary. [...]

The ATF applies this law by requiring you to obtain a Type 07 FFL before you build anything.

Now then, if you aren't otherwise prohibited from owning a gun, this doesn't apply to building a gun for your own personal use, if it isn't a semi-auto "assault weapon," semi-auto shotgun, or NFA weapon. Typically, a fifteen year-old is prohibited from owning a handgun at least; one can be provided to him for limited and express purposes, stated in writing by the guardian. It's also worth noting that NFA weapons include "gadget guns" (which can mean anything a goon wants it to mean), and destructive devices such as this kid's incendiary device. Once the boy interfaced with the legal "authorities," he was screwed.

If complying with the US's unconstitutional laws is your thing, familiarize yourself with Title 18 of the US Code. And talk your lawyer. Don't take my word for it.

(sic)

If you say so. Judging by your grammar, spelling, punctuation, and use of capitalization, you do know "dumb." BTW- you only had to hit the "send" button once.
